SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
The Paralegal Program Coordinator is the first-line manager responsible for the operational and curricular affairs of the paralegal degree program. The Coordinator must insure the enrollment health of the program through effective recruitment and retention strategies. In addition, the Coordinator must insure efficacy of the curriculum and faculty so that program graduates acquire the skills and knowledge needed in the contemporary law environment and also be prepared to transfer to a baccalaureate program. In particular, the Coordinator insures program compliance with the standards set forth by the American Bar Association to maintain approval/re-approval of the Rowan College at Burlington County paralegal program.


SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop, in collaboration with Division Dean and/or Associate Dean, course syllabi, assessments, and rubrics as part of program development and institutional and student outcomes assessment.
  2. Advise program students and resolve issues or complaints.
  3. Assure that the Paralegal Advisory Committee has the necessary membership, meets with the required frequency, minutes are kept and an annual summary report of accomplishments of the committee is submitted to the Dean.
  4. Prepare the program’s self-study for approval/reapproval purposes and to comply with the institutional Five-Year Periodic Program Review process.
  5. Evaluate and, where appropriate, make changes to the overall Paralegal program, including regular assessment of the legal community, students, graduates and employers.
  6. Work with the Associate Dean, Dean, and/or Liberal Arts Adjunct Coordinator in the recruitment, selection, supervision and evaluation of all program adjunct faculty.
  7. Determine the texts to be used in the program courses.
  8. Participate in continuing legal/professional development activities annually and encourage adjunct faculty professional development. Participate in local and national paralegal organizations; e.g. attend annual national conferences sponsored by the American Association for Paralegal Education.
  9. Serve as a liaison with the legal, paralegal, and paralegal education communities.
  10. Serve as a liaison to the Library to ensure the availability of necessary paralegal program resources.
  11. Arrange and monitor student internships.
  12. Insure that there is a Course Outline and an up to date syllabus on file for each paralegal course.
  13. Provide guidance and assistance to the Associate Dean and Dean to insure the effective operation and delivery of the program and to keep them apprised of all relevant issues and circumstances.
  14. Handle day-to-day program affairs to include prompt response to inquiries and issues.
  15. Represent the program throughout the administrative and academic structure of the institution.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

OVERALL PURPOSE AND RESPONSIBILITY:

Paralegal Program Coordinator is responsible for the overall management of the paralegal program, the appropriateness, rigor and assessment of the curriculum and deployment of faculty of the highest quality. This especially includes insuring compliance with the standards set forth by the American Bar Association to maintain approval/re-approval of the Rowan College at Burlington County paralegal program.

The most important overall responsibility of all RCBC employees is to provide service in a pleasant, helpful, and effective manner to our students, other members of the college and the public.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Paralegal with three (3) years of experience, supplemented with a Master’s Degree in Legal Studies or a related field. Juris Doctorate preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Experience working as or with paralegal/legal assistant staff

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

Minimum of one year of teaching at the college level

Director of or management position in a paralegal program


SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. In-depth knowledge of the role and value of a paralegal/legal assistant in a legal environment.
  2. Evidence of a strong commitment to education and remaining current in the field, including maintaining awareness of developments in paralegal education.
  3. Excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills.
  4. Ethical standards of the highest caliber.
  5. Administrative program experience, such as overseeing or coordinating a program and/or courses, program assessment, curriculum review.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to community college mission of providing instruction to students of diverse abilities, interests, and cultural backgrounds.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS

Accepts responsibility for the timely preparation of student outcomes assessment efforts of the faculty in planning, collecting data, and reporting dates as they relate to course outcomes, program outcomes, general education outcomes, and developmental program outcomes. Actively participates in setting annual division goals and objectives, completing OIR reporting forms, collecting data, analyzing data, and preparing a report using guidelines established by OIR.
