General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Dean and Associate Dean, The Physics instructor position involves participating in and contributing to a dynamic department. The Physics instructor is responsible for providing instruction in introductory physics courses as well as mathematics courses which may include, but are not limited to, Descriptive Physics, Technical Physics, Math Fundamentals/Math Modules, Beginning Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Technical Math, Thinking Mathematically, Contemporary Mathematics, Business Math, Trigonometry. This is a full-time position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provide Instruction in Assigned Subject Areas:

Provide instruction consistent with the objectives of each course assigned by employing diverse teaching methods appropriate to individual student needs to accommodate various levels of academic preparation. Courses assigned may be at other SCC locations, at area high schools (dual-credit), or offered via distance learning technology (live or asynchronous).


Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Material:
In cooperation with other department faculty across SCC’s campuses, develop and/or revise written course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies as required to keep the English courses current with pedagogy, best practice, and new editions of texts and other educational resources. Develop, revise and maintain written classroom policies, grading structures, and strategies.

Provide For Student Evaluation and Record Keeping:
Develop a grading system for each class and maintain accurate records on student attendance, performance, and progress. Participate in and/or provide data for department and general education assessment.

Maintain Learning Environment:
Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student and faculty interaction, and individualized support for learners. The instructor is responsible for creating and maintaining instruction and instructional materials which are free of gender, cultural, and ethnic bias. Maintain posted office hours in accordance with departmental and policies of the College and encourages students to visit during these times. Use technology to assist in ongoing communication with students. Encourage a sense of community among students for learning both inside and outside the classroom. Ensure classrooms and lab are kept in an orderly manner to present a proper learning environment for all students, this includes reporting facility problems to the supervisor.

Serve as an Academic Advisor:
Serve as academic advisor to assigned students. Tasks include, but are not limited to, assisting students in developing academic plans, selecting and registering for courses in the prescribed course of study or area of interest. Advise potential or current students within the discipline about the program, career, or transfer options available to assist with degree completion. Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services available at the College or in the community. Explain college policies and procedures to students and complete all records and forms necessary.

Remain Current in Events and Developments Related to Subject Areas:
Remain current in the field and with best practices in teaching and learning through self-study and participation in professional development such as in-service activities/training, conferences, workshops, and professional enrichment activities. Contributing to department initiatives and supporting others will be expected and supported.

Participate in College and Program Activities and Committees:
Attend, participate in, and support all department, division, and college activities and committees as requested and serve on assigned teams to contribute to the continuous improvement and innovation of the College and department.
Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors):
Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction.
Professional Development:
Faculty should work with their immediate supervisor to develop an annual plan of professional development and improvement that includes examining and adapting one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to continuously improve and support student learning.

Perform Other College and Program Duties as Assigned:
The instructor will assist in maintaining security for all College equipment and materials. Provide information and data to assist in the preparation of budgets, course schedules, short and long-range plans, and other required reports.

The instructor may have additional duties and responsibilities of supervising and coordinating the activities of the program and its faculty if offered the opportunity to be Program Director/Department Chair. The primary role of the Program Director/Department Chair is to ensure that through personal and faculty efforts, students are able to achieve the objectives of the program. The Program Director reports to the Dean or Associate Dean of the Division.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Physics or Master’s degree in another field with at least 18 graduate hours in Physics.
  • Teaching experience equivalent to 18 semester hours or 6 courses/sections at secondary or post-secondary level that applies directly to area(s) of instructional responsibility. Graduate teaching experience is acceptable.

Desired Qualifications
  • Coursework in education, science education, math education.
  • Experience teaching both math and physics, including developmental math.
  • Experience teaching technical physics.
  • Experience teaching at a community college.
  • Experience working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience/involvement with college-related activities/committees outside the classroom.
  • Academic advising experience.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Experience teaching dual-credit courses.
  • Training and experience with distance learning, online learning.

Salary
$52,800/yr
