Position Summary

The Opportunity:  Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for full-time, tenure track faculty positions in Physics. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Candidates should be able and excited to teach a variety of first- and second-year Physics courses including algebra-based and engineering (calculus-based) physics courses. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, staff and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative and equity-minded teaching, a diverse learning environment, and a strong focus on improving student success rates and addressing systemic inequities in access and achievement for all students.
 
Science classes for the Skagit Valley College District are offered at our Mount Vernon Campus and Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor. This position is primarily based at the Mount Vernon Campus, however instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor or to teach students via online instruction.
 
SVC Physics faculty teach an equivalent of 13-15 credits per quarter (2-3 classes) and participate in College service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide classroom and/or online instruction in general and engineering Physics and/or other closely related disciplines; 
  • Provide leadership in developing the Physics program, developing innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes; 
  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative pedagogy and advances in the field of Physics; 
  • Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop appropriate curriculum for the Physics program that reflects diversity of student experience, including underrepresented and underserved students; 
  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success; 
  • Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines or fields to develop and to offer integrative learning experiences; 
  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes; participate in the colleges program review process;
  • Advise and mentor students, including those from underrepresented and underserved groups; 
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and transfer institutions to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps; 
  • Assist in developing, assessing, and analyzing program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning; 
  • Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching; 
  • Use inclusive and effective teaching methods to support and to enhance learning for students inside and outside of the classroom; 
  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning; 
  • Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching; 
  • Mentor and assist part-time faculty teaching Physics or similar disciplines; 
  • Participate in unit, department and other college activities, including college governance; 
  • Fulfill full-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and Skagit Valley College policies; 
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Impart excitement and enthusiasm into teaching of Physics; 
  • Demonstrate knowledge and familiarity with current theories, research, and practice in Physics; 
  • Develop innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes; 
  • Engage students through innovative instructional approaches including learning communities, service learning projects, contextualized learning, etc.; 
  • Demonstrate commitment to equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for all students; 
  • Practice and adopt a variety of active learning strategies that facilitate student learning and that are inclusive of all cultures and backgrounds; 
  • Support students in accessing appropriate instructional and non-instructional services to facilitate student retention, completion and academic success for all students; 
  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including interdisciplinary learning communities, online and hybrid modalities, etc.; 
  • Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment; 
  • Build a Physics program that meets the needs of the college's students and the community; 
  • Recruit and inspire diverse student populations to embrace learning and facilitate completion; 
  • Work and interact effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and other various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds in support of SVC's commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion; 
  • Act according to principles of integrity, respect, open and honest communication, collaboration, and compassion.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have, or ability to obtain a Master's Degree in Physics or closely related field by June 2023; 
  • One (1) year of teaching experience, which may include previous community college, university, K-12, graduate school, teaching assistant, and/or substitute teaching.

  Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, or closely related field;
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting;
  • Demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching and learning practices.



 

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:

  • Initial annual salary placement ranges from $63,160-$84,213  for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. 
  • Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Conditions of Employment:
