Position Title: Agricultural Science Faculty

Reports To: Department Chair

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the department chair, the faculty member will:

 

1. Teach courses in the agricultural sciences including but not limited to courses in Animal Science, Soil and Crop
Science, and Agricultural Business.

2. Assist in planning and curriculum development.
3. Responsible for recruiting a diverse student population into the program.
4. Supervise college laboratories, to be established (farm, feeding center, greenhouse, laboratory, etc.) for students

agricultural curricula.

5. Organize and manage classrooms, shops, and laboratories. Coordinate the maintenance and repair of tools and
equipment.

6. Provide advising and mentoring for students as required.
7. Participate in faculty meetings and committees.
8. Demonstrate competent leadership abilities; maintain positive interpersonal relationships with faculty, staff and

students.

9. Perform additional responsibilities as assigned, to include departmental outreach and service, consistent with the
college’s mission.

10. Keep local school districts informed concerning the educational opportunities, career possibilities, and instructional
programs available to youth agriculture.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s Degree in any field with 18+ graduate credit hours in agriculture-related discipline

• Hold or be eligible for a Career and Technical Education Credential including 4,000 hours of related work experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Agricultural Science or related discipline.

• Experience in teaching courses in Soil and Crop Science.

• Experience in teaching courses in Animal Science.
• Experience in teaching courses in Agriculture Business.
• Demonstrate instructional quality; e.g., coursework or training in teaching methods or assessment of student learning.

• Prior teaching experience in secondary agricultural education.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong computer skills.
• Evidence of flexibility in teaching methods to accommodate various learning styles.

• Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with diverse populations including experience working with adult and non-

traditional learners.

• Willingness to teach a varied schedule including evenings, weekends and summer.

• Have effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate successfully with the regional agricultural community

faculty, students and administration.

• Educational philosophy in alignment with that of a small rural, comprehensive Community College and enthusiasm for this type

of environment and the aspirations of its people.

 

SALARY:
$44,500 - $47,500 with excellent benefit package including PERA retirement, health, vision, dental, life insurance, and

paid sick and personal leave.

166 Day Contract – 9-month academic year position

ABOUT OTERO COLLEGE:
Founded in 1941, Otero College is an accredited Hispanic Serving Institution and is a state two-year community college with

approximately 1500 students (1250 FTE) made up of traditional, non-traditional and international students. The college is governed

by the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education. Otero is located on an attractive 40-acre campus on

the southern edge of La Junta, Colorado. The college is a full-service campus with dormitory housing, food service, men’s and
