Part-Time Academic Success Coach/Advisor

Job Description

Savannah Technical College is seeking a part-time Academic Coach for the Adult Education GED Program.  This program is grant funded, positions are contingent upon receipt of funding.  The Academic Coachs role initiates student contact to ensure student success within program, provides academic advising, resource and referrals, and counsel on attendance and other issues. Researches and evaluates available community services in assisting student to remove barriers, and develops and implements recruitment and retention strategies. Designs and delivers workshops, small training sessions, and supplemental mathematics or English language courses. Incumbent in this classification works independently at an assigned campus location. This position will work with the Admission Coordinator and Academic Coordinator.
 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, or related field. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in an educational or social service environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with at-risk and culturally diverse populations.
  • Experience working with students or clients in advising and developing goals.
  • Experience  coordinating educational and community-based services.
  • Experience managing case files. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

NOTE: Only on-campus opportunities exist at this time at the Savannah Campus. The shift for this position includes days and evenings.


Preferred Qualifications 

  • Preference will be given to applicants with experience as an Academic Coach or school counselor in the State of Georgia.
  • Masters degree in Education, Psychology, Social Science, Counseling, or related field.
  • Two or more years' teaching experience with adults (preferably in a community/technical college setting).
  • Experience working in an academic environment, preferably alternative education.
  • Experience with academic advising in a college setting. 
  • Demonstrated competency in organizing data, maintaining files, and preparing reports.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and presenting workshops and/or classes.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively solve problems and resolve conflicts.
  • Demonstrated effective classroom management skills with adult students.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate and collaborate with multiple groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Computer skills including, but not limited to MS Office, Internet, Blackboard, SASI.
  • Knowledge of college admissions requirements. 
  • Knowledge of local social service agencies and other resources.

Physical Demands
The employee occasionally lifts or moves objects of a light to medium weight, up to 25 pounds.  Work is typically performed in an office environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings.  Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized for data entry purposes.
 
Salary
Salary is commensurate with education and work experience.  Positions are contingent upon funding.
