Electro-Mechanical Laboratory Technician (Regular Part-Time)

Job Description

Preference will be given to qualified regular part-time employees within the Part-Time Support Staff bargaining unit at Sheridan College. Should a suitable candidate not be found, external candidates will be considered.

The Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology Laboratory Technician will provide support services for Sheridans laboratories: Mechanical Engineering laboratories, including supporting Robotic, Mechatronics and Electronics Laboratories.  Reporting to the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Technology Laboratory Manager, the Technician will contribute to the efficient and successful operations of all labs within MEET (Mechanical Engineering Electrical Technology). In coordination with other laboratory staff and course instructors, the Technologist can be assigned various course assignments and be responsible for preparing all necessary functions in the multiple fortes of engineering for delivery with required equipment/instruments to specific labs.


What Youll be Doing

  • Setting up and taking down laboratory experiments according to lab schedules (including preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs);
  • Assisting professors and students with equipment, instruments, and procedures during classes for primarily Mechanical Labs, including demonstration of equipment usage;
  • Organizing and maintaining all laboratories as per established standards (i.e. general orderliness and cleanliness);
  • Implementing health & safety protocols in the laboratories, enforcing safety policies;
  • Basic maintenance of equipment/instruments and troubleshooting of mechanical engineering equipment and ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials;
  • Technical writing of documents such as standard operating procedures, lab manuals, and safety documents;
  • Maintaining SDS;
  • Maintaining and updating the inventory of equipment material and consumables;
  • Safely disposing of hazardous waste by coordinates of procedures;
  • Receiving of equipment and materials safely from loading docks;
  • Some lifting, up to 50 lb on various occasions;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned;
  • Supporting labs at which can be assigned within the hours from 8 AM until 11 PM, and work hours can change from semester to semester;
  • Developing lab exercises and overseeing student Industry projects and Capstone projects, in consultation with faculty;
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting machinery and workstations in the Integrated Manufacturing Systems Lab, Process Control Lab, Programmable Logic Control Lab (PLC), and Mechanical Labs, Robotics lab;
  • Demonstrating and clarifying sound theoretical and working knowledge of all aspects of each piece of equipment   (i.e., safety, operating procedures, special applications and setup as well as trouble-shooting techniques);
  • Ensuring safety systems and correct installation of equipment is maintained and adhered to in accordance with Health and Safety Guidelines and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA);
  • Installing, maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting machinery and workstations in the Integrated Manufacturing Systems Lab, Process Control Lab, Programmable Logic Control Lab (PLC), and Mechanical Labs, Robotics lab, Electronics Lab;
  • Perform other duties as required.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • Possess a minimum of a three-year diploma/Degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or a related field and/or a Certificate of qualification and Certificate of Apprenticeship with the Industrial, skilled trades
  • Have experience working in a laboratory setting (mechanical/electric lab), preferably in a post-secondary environment (or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience).
  • Must be able to operate various equipment, which includes Robotics, ABB and Fanuc, vision systems (Cognex), Siemens and Allen Bradly PLC programming, General Mechatronics knowledge and skills and knowledge and experience in Industry 4.0, along with having a firm understanding of safe working procedures.
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, are also required. Efficient knowledge of Solidworks, Autocad and other engineering software is an asset.
  • Available to work evenings and flexible hours

Hourly Rate: $28.45 + 4% in lieu
