Job Title: Career, Transfer, and Veteran Center Coordinator

Department: Student Engagement & Services

Reports To: Director, Student Engagement & Services



JOB PURPOSE

The coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Career, Transfer, and Veteran Center. The primary purpose of this position is to provide career counseling, veteran advising, and development to students. Additional responsibilities include being a liaison to local, regional, and national employers for job placement of current students and recent graduates. The position will also assist in helping students with transfer decisions along with coordinating opportunities to meet with transfer institution partners.

The position will work primarily out of the Columbia campus on an altered schedule to provide service to evening students. Occasional travel to each of the five campuses and cover the entirety of the nine-county service area. Estimated work hours will be 10:30AM-7PM Monday-Thursday, and 7:45AM-4:15PM on Friday. During interim hours when classes are not in session, the coordinator will work regular business hours, Monday-Friday 7:45AM-4:15PM.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Collaborate with academic offices and faculty along with various college departments and administrators to identify, define, and meet student career planning, veteran, and development needs and desired outcomes.
  • Develop and implement an effective program to reach and assist students who are undecided about a major.
  • Provide individual and group career development to students utilizing current career counseling methodologies and assessments.
  • Facilitate programs designed to equip students with job search skills as well as employment preparation, readiness, and retention strategies.
  • Manage colleges physical and online career services presence that includes, but not limited to:
  • Promote college to local and regional employers, faculty, and students.
  • Promote college to local and regional employers, faculty, and students
  • Maintaining the college's career services webpages
  • Liaison with local, regional, and national employers
  • Serving as Handshake administrator or co-administrator
  • Utilizing Handshake platform functions such as college profile management, student uploads, employer and posting approvals, and virtual and in-person career fairs
  • Serve as the primary contact for transfer institutions and partners and maintain the transfer information webpage.
  • Maintain requirements for the MOU-DOD agreement and keep program information up to date with all veteran agencies and partnering organizations.
  • Regularly communicate with each enrolled veteran to determine potential issues and work toward resolution.
  • Coordinate career, transfer and veteran programs such as resource, transfer, and career fairs, employer tabling, and university tabling events.
  • Disseminate transfer information to students such as admission deadlines, scholarship opportunities, and academic information.
  • Collaborate with college, local, State, and national employers and employer organizations to improve Columbia State relations and programming.
  • Assist in the marketing and development of high impact practices such as worked-based learning, certifications, and other areas in relation to career development.
  • Advise a caseload of students at critical junctures in exploring career/transfer options and developing alternative academic plans including the facilitation of appropriate interventions. Potential caseload would be veteran students and undecided majors.
  • Maintain detailed records of student interactions and assure accurate tracking of individual student interventions and outcomes for at risk students.

 
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Support the Department of Student Engagement and Division of Student Affairs as needed.
Assist with New Student Orientation, Student Activities or other student programs and services as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervision of work-study or student interns as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience Required:
Bachelors Degree in related field

 
Education, Training and Experience Preferred:
Masters Degree in Counseling, Student Development or equivalent
Certifications in career counseling and development

 
 
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Work Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of active listening and general counseling techniques
  • Knowledge of career counseling theory and techniques and able to perform effective individual career counseling in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of effective job search techniques and strategies and able to train students in acquiring job search skills.
  • Certified to administer and interpret online career planning assessments including the MBTI, Strong Interest Inventory and the Discover online career planning program and other related resources.
  • Able to give effective, focused and practical group presentations
  • Able to effectively use information technology to deliver services and perform administrative functions
  • Ability to research career information including salary data, employment projections and academic options for specific careers
  • Ability to create and implement ongoing activities to engage students without a defined major program of study
  • Must be able to take a proactive approach to workflow and be able to make independent decisions
  • Able to prioritize and to achieve department performance objectives
  • Able to interact with students, employers and co-workers in a professional manner
  • Knowledge of Banner, Tennessee Board of Regents academic and student policies, testing and advising and retention guidelines.

 

 


Working Conditions:

  • Work schedule is 37.5 hours Monday through Friday.
  • Visual and hand usage of computer terminal.
  • Travel to other campus locations and 9 county service area.
  • Normal sitting and movement in an office environment.
