Director of Student Research and Science Laboratories

Job Description

The Director of Student Research and Science Laboratories will collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and manage research learning opportunities for students, including internships, research projects, and independent projects. This twelve (12)-month full-time position will guide students in the development of their personal and professional goals as well as ensure appropriate readiness for baccalaureate opportunities.

In addition, the Director of Student Research and Science Laboratories will oversee all science laboratories and personnel ensuring that science courses have laboratory experiences that are congruent with course learning outcomes and, where appropriate foster the acquisition of the scientific method.

The Director of Student Research and Science Laboratories will perform administrative and supervisory responsibilities that focus on student success initiatives and the Colleges educational goals and priorities. Using predictive and learning analytics, this position will support the primary institutional mission of student success. The Director of Student Research and Science Laboratories may also teach academic subjects, evaluate staff including faculty and adjunct faculty, carry out administrative projects and programs, and advise students.

Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Advises students on development of undergraduate research proposals.
  • Recruits faculty mentors for research projects and facilitate mentor-student pairings.
  • Works with students, faculty and staff to promote and facilitate mentor-directed undergraduate research.
  • Oversees Grants as assigned.
  • Editor for the Research Journal.
  • Evaluates staff including faculty and adjunct faculty.
  • Coordinates applications and data gathering for fellowships, scholarships, and awards related to undergraduate research.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administration to obtain external funding to support undergraduate research programs.
  • Designs systems to track student participation in research and outcomes.
  • Develops professional development programming for summer research opportunities.
  • Develops and delivers training in best practices in mentoring.
  • Oversees and manages the laboratory budget.
  • Oversees all science laboratories.
  • Evaluates and supports laboratory staff.
  • Recommends the scheduling of lab personnel.
  • Uses data and analytics to interview and evaluate staff, including faculty and adjunct faculty for purposes including, but not limited to, hiring, retention, non-renewals and/or discipline.
  • Designs, prepares and develops instructional materials.
  • Supports student learning outside of class by maintaining office hours.
  • Supports students through advising, tutoring and mentoring activities.
  • Writes grants and participates in the administration of grant activities.
  • Assists in the development and oversight of the Perkins budget in the STEM division.
  • Carries out administrative tasks and programs as assigned by Administration.
  • Participates in the College governance process.
  • Represents the College at conferences and seminars, as needed.
  • Participates in all commencement events.
  • Exhibits prompt attendance as an essential job responsibility.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education Requirements
Masters degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics required.

Experience
Supervisory experience preferred.
Experience with Scientific Research Required

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • This positions duties are normally performed in a typical interior/residence work environment, based on the activity scheduled.
  • Some physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
  • Some travel is required.

Salary $65,500-$85,000

Terms of Employment
Flexible schedule to meet College needs. Some evening, weekends, and extended hours will be required. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice to all on and off-campus sites as needed by the College. Employee must establish primary residency in New Jersey within one year of appointment unless an exemption applies.
