Job Description

Position Summary:  In a learner-centered environment, primary responsibilities include teaching the assigned load in the nursing program, maintaining professional development in nursing and education, and contributing to curriculum development and evaluation in collaboration with others. 

 

Specific Responsibilities Ohio Administrative Code (OAC) 4723-5-19

 

1.     Provide a syllabus or outline to each nursing student which includes at least:

            a.    The title of the course

            b.    The number of theory hours, if applicable

            c.     The number of clinical and laboratory hours combined, if applicable and of this combined number.

  • The total number of planned clinical hours
  • The total number of planned laboratory hours

            d.    The course description

            e.    The course objectives and outcomes

            f.     The teaching strategies, including the job title, credentials or other information describing the background of the individual providing course content, whose qualifications 

                    are directly related to the course.

            g.    The methods of evaluation

            h.    The name of the faculty who will be teaching the course

                     i.      The name of teaching assistants that will teach the course, or provide instruction in laboratory or clinical settings, as directed by faculty

            j.     The required textbooks and other bibliography of learning resources

2.      Design and implement teaching strategies that will assist a nursing student to meet the course objectives or outcomes

3.      Direct and supervise the activities of a teaching assistant, if utilized

4.      Evaluate each nursing student's achievement and progress with input from the teaching assistant or preceptor, if utilized.

5.      At the conclusion of each course, the faculty responsible for teaching the course shall.

a.    Compare the number of planned clinical hours as established in the syllabus with the number of clinical hours actually provided to students and report the course data to the administrator.

b.    Compare the number of planned laboratory hours as established in the syllabus with the number of laboratory hours actually provided to students and report the data to

        the administrator

6.      Develop and revise the nursing curriculum through using creativity in designing and implementing teaching strategies that will assist the nursing student to meet the 

         course objectives and outcomes.

7.      Develop and revise program policies for the LPN program congruent with the OAC and the policies of Belmont College.

8.      Serve as a resource person to (a) other nursing faculty both full- and part-time, (b) other Belmont faculty in their pursuit of basic skills and adjunct courses.  

9.      Attend faculty meetings and special functions of the College as well as participate in continually personal and professional development.

 10.    Maintain academic standards and integrity through demonstrating expertise in independent decision making, and incorporating the nursing programs philosophy, goals and objectives.

 11.    Participate in a systematic plan of nursing curriculum and program evaluation.

12.   Serve on assigned or voluntary committees and/or as an officer of both the nursing faculty and College faculty.

13.   Adhere to College and faculty policies including the maintenance of office hours as outlined in the union contract

14.   Other duties as assigned.

 

Responsibilities of Faculty, teaching assistants and preceptors in a clinical setting (OAC) 4723-5-20

 

  1. A faculty member of a nursing education program is responsible for planning the students clinical experience and for evaluating the students performance.  Clinical nursing experiences are assigned by faculty based on course objectives and student learning needs.  Faculty, teaching assistants or preceptors shall supervise student practice by providing guidance, direction and support appropriate to the clinical situation. 
  2. Supervision of a nursing student shall be provided for each clinical experience involving the delivery of nursing care to an individual or group of individuals.  This supervision shall be provided only by a faculty member, teaching assistant or preceptor who meets the qualifications set forth in rule 4723-5-10 of the Administrative Code for a registered nursing education program, or rule 4723-5-11 of the Administrative Code for a practical nursing education program. 
  3. All experiences for a nursing student in a clinical setting involving the delivery of nursing care to an individual or group of individuals shall be performed under the direction of a faculty member who functions only as a faculty member during the nursing student's clinical experience.  The faculty member providing direction shall:

         a.  Establish clinical objectives or outcomes within the framework of the course in which the student is enrolled.

         b.  Communicate clinical objectives or outcomes to:

                                      1.    the student;

                                      2.    the teaching assistant and preceptor, if utilized; and

                                      3.    the staff at the clinical site;

                    c.   Provide for orientation of each student to the clinical site, including introduction to staff.

                    d.  Make assignments, in conjunction with the teaching assistant or preceptor, if utilized, for the student's experience, consistent with the specific objectives or outcomes of the course in        which the student is enrolled.

                    e.  Provide supervision of each student in accordance with Rule 4723-5-20 of the Administrative Code; and

                    f.   Evaluate the student's experience, achievement, and progress in relation to the clinical objectives or outcomes, with input from the teaching assistant or preceptor, if utilized.

                    g.  The faculty member may assign an observational experience as appropriate to meet course objectives.

                    h.  The faculty or teaching assistant to student ratio for direct patient care experiences shall be no greater a ratio than ten students to one faculty or teaching assistant, 

                    or a smaller ratio in clinical settings where necessary to ensure the safe delivery of nursing care.

                    i.    The teaching assistant or preceptor providing supervision of a nursing student shall at least

                              1.    Have competence in the area of clinical practice in which the teaching assistant or preceptor is providing supervision to a student.

                                  2.    Design, at the direction a faculty member, the students clinical experience to achieve the stated objectives or outcomes of the nursing course in which the

                                           student is enrolled.

                             3.    Clarify with the faculty member

  • The role of the teaching assistant or preceptor
  • The responsibilities of the faculty member
  • The course and clinical objectives or outcomes
  • The clinical experience evaluation tool

4.      Contribute to the evaluation of the students performance by providing information to the faculty member and the student regarding the students achievement of established objectives or   outcomes. 

5.      A preceptor shall provide supervision to no more than two nursing students at any one time, provided the circumstances are such that the preceptor can adequately supervise the practice of both   students. 

6.      Plan the rotation of the nurse student group for clinical experience.

7.      Maintain an adequate system of records for the school and clinical lab experience. 

8.      Investigate and study trends, and developments in nursing practices and education.

9.      Guide and counsel students in educational and personal adjustments.

10.    Identify general health and welfare of the practical nursing student according to policy.

11.    Provide instruction at off campus sites as assigned.

12.    Adhere to College and faculty policies including the maintenance of office hours as outlined in the union contract.

13.    Perform other duties as assigned.

 

In addition, full-time Practical Nursing Faculty are responsible for adhering to the requirements of the following Belmont College general full-time faculty position description:

 

  1.   Maintain the academic standards and integrity of the program.

2.    Develop, execute, evaluate, and update the course syllabi and provide Belmont College with the most recent official copy in electronic format.

3.    Prepare daily lesson plans, course outlines, and other instructional materials as needed for effective instruction.

4.    Develop, teach, and evaluate all assigned courses incorporating active learning strategies.

5.    Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate examinations and other assessment methodologies.

6.    Recommend and order texts and other instructional materials to be used for instructional functions.

7.    Maintain a schedule of available office hours for consultation with students and others as may be required.

8.    Guide and counsel the student in her/his educational adjustments.   Refer students for counseling and tutoring when necessary.

9.    Recognize and adapt teaching style to the educational needs of the individual students.

10.  Communicate tact and impartiality in dealing with students and student related problems.

11.  Demonstrate expertise in independent decision-making incorporating goals and objectives of the course.

12.  Demonstrate competency in use of email, voice mail, and any electronic resources or learning management systems as utilized by the college or academic program.

13.  Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate assessment strategies to measure Core Learning Outcomes and direct measures of student learning.

14.  Perform instructional duties as assigned.

15.  Provide instruction at off-campus sites as assigned.

16.  Submit attendance and grades for assigned students electronically as required and maintain appropriate grading documentation.

17.  Plan, attend, and assist with student, faculty, and college activities.

18.  Participate in enrollment management including marketing, recruitment, and retention of students.

19.  Attend department faculty meetings.

20.  Maintain ongoing professional development.

21.  Establish and maintain professional communication and working relationships with all college faculty, administration, and staff.

22.  Serve on assigned or voluntary committees, governance teams, and task forces, and/or as an officer of the Faculty Council.  

23.  Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate College and faculty policies, including FERPA.

24.  As needed, assist the Provost and the Director of Nursing in the preparation of course descriptions and instructional schedules.

25.  Recommend to the Provost and the Director of Nursing curriculum changes and/or revisions that will improve the instructional process.  May be assigned to assist in the development of new related proposed technologies.

26.  Design, implement, and evaluate a systematic plan for program evaluation in collaboration with the Provost and the Director of Nursing.

27.  Assist the Provost and the Director of Nursing in all advisory committee functions.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

 

           This position requires thorough knowledge of nursing.  Individual must project a professional image and possess strong communication skills.   Individual should be knowledgeable in the areas of clinical nursing skills, legal/ethical issues in nursing, scope of practice, and evidence-based practice and active learning strategies
