The Business and Community Education department is looking for a Floor Covering Installer Instructor to join their team starting. The Business and Community Education department provides services to the community, students and businesses looking for short-term training, continuing education, workforce training, apprenticeships, customized business training, and community resources.

There is a large need for talent in the floor covering industry and we are looking to help area floor covering businesses fulfill this need. As the Floor Covering Installer Instructor, you would be responsible for the administration and instruction efforts of the floor covering installation apprenticeship program. Responsibilities include preparing materials needed for course instruction and facilitating a focused and engaging learning environment that fosters student growth and increased skill performance.

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaches program-specific content in-person using established curriculum.

  • Prepares materials needed for course instruction, labs, and testing.

  • Creates a focused and engaged learning environment that prepares students for a career in the floor-covering industry.

  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Relates instruction and material course objectives to real-world, industry-specific examples.

  • Submits grades, attendance, reports, and records on time.

  • Participates in professional development.

  • Keeps current with manufacturing trends and training needs.

  • Ensures safety and security requirements are adhered to in training areas.

  • Maintains program certification requirements as appropriate.

  • Attends conferences, annual meetings, etc., on behalf of the technical college when needed.

  • Participates in campus committees as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Unless otherwise approved under Hawkeyes remote work policy, regular on campus and/or onsite attendance is considered an essential function of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Three (3) years of experience in floor covering installation.

  • Demonstrated exceptional project and time management, prioritization and organizational skills.

  • Demonstrated experience in presenting to public and private groups.

  • Proficient in administering surveys to evaluate progress.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently without direct supervision as well as with a team.

  • Demonstrated effective writing and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to receive constructive feedback as well as lead and foster a positive learning environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit professional judgement, decision making, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a culturally diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal communication.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize Microsoft Office Suite, Google applications, and video conferencing technology.

  • Demonstrated ability to execute organization and department policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential/sensitive information with discretion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching program-specific content using an established curriculum.

  • 5+ years experience in floor covering installation

Working Conditions

Anticipated schedule is 6 hours a day, Monday – Friday when classes are in session. Classes are scheduled to run for 10 weeks beginning March 2023. It is possible, however, that this position would be needed evenings, therefore flexibility in scheduling will be vital to accommodate class schedules.

Work is performed either in or a combination of an office setting, classroom setting and/or lab environment, with a combination of natural and florescent light. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard, tools and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move frequently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computers.

Employment Status

Part-time, non-exempt position averaging up to 30 hours per week when classes are in session (classes run on a 10-week schedule).
