Job Summary 
Serves as the main point of contact for students experiencing basic needs insecurity. Assists students in addressing basic needs insecurity by providing direct basic needs resources and connecting students with wrap-around and on-going supports students need to start, persist, and successfully complete a credential, degree, or certificate program. Connects students to on-campus and community resources in the form of economic crisis intervention, student health and wellness intervention. Triages student situations and develops student resource plans that connect students to on-campus and community resources to support them in overcoming personal and academic obstacles so that they can begin and/or continue their studies. Assists students with financial aid processes and other forms of payment and financial assistance resulting in individualized resource funding identification. Assists students with interpreting college systems and in developing their navigation and self-advocacy skills. Works closely with Associated Students of MHCC, Barneys Food Pantry, Adult Basic Skills, Career Pathways and with service areas across the colleges campuses and centers. Provides ongoing support, outreach, and follow up to students.
 
Essential Duties 

1. Serves as a liaison between and works collaboratively with the Student Life Team and other on campus supports to seek solutions and remove barriers that may prevent students from meeting their needs and achieving academic goals.
2. Conducts initial meetings with students to assess needs for appropriate referrals. Responds to incoming referrals, and directs student requests by contacting students, connecting students to college and community resources, and refers students as appropriate. Communicates with students via phone, email, and text message to ensure timely, effective and efficient communications.
3. Facilitates information sharing, as permitted by FERPA, with identified entities including, but not limited to campus departments, parents, families, and designated emergency contacts as appropriate regarding basic needs.
4. Assists in providing crisis intervention for students with immediate definable needs such as shelter, safety, food, financial, healthcare, technology or transportation.
5. Assists students in coordinating financial aid with other forms of financial assistance, resulting in an individualized funding plan for both short term and long-term educational goals. Verifies student information, and refers students as needed.
6. Provides resource distribution to support students experiencing family, personal, or economic crises that may affect school performance. Connects students to needed counseling services, support networks, community health services, or housing services.
7. Contributes to the development and implementation of Student Basic Needs policies and procedures while using a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens relating to outreach, campus basic needs initiatives, publications, and social media. Interprets institutional policies and procedures (e.g., financial aid, program requirements, etc.) to provide sound guidance.
8. Guides students in the development of financial literacy and budgeting skills, helping them to identify gaps of needed resources. Coordinates educational resources and training and demonstrates the use of financial literacy tools and strategies.
9. Creates brochures, forms, and documents for distribution and/or presentation. Conducts outreach for marginalized populations through campus community. Ensures accuracy of print and online publications related to the area of responsibility. Collects and maintains educational and resource materials for students and staff use.
10. Assists with the development and maintenance of an internal and external resource directory for educational and community resources, including social service agencies; facilitates relationships with off-campus agencies and resources that connects students to long-term support.
11. Maintains confidential records on each student that receives services, with accurate documentation. Assists in accurately tracking and maintaining student records for grant reporting.
 
Additional Duties 
1. Acts as a college representative when connecting with external partners such as high schools, other post-secondary institutions, community-based agencies, and professional organizations.
2. Participates in appropriate committees and meetings as needed.
3. May design and deliver presentations to students and internal and external stakeholders.
4. Performs all other duties as assigned.                

 

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Computer Skills, etc.) 

• Associates degree in education, counseling, or related field
• Three (3) years of experience working with marginalized and culturally diverse populations in an advising, workforce development, and/or social work role
• Bilingual in English and either Spanish, Russian/Ukrainian or Vietnamese
• Experience providing direct service and/or interpreting and translating in Spanish, Russian/Ukrainian or Vietnamese
• Intermediate level skill with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Basic skill with Microsoft Excel, Forms and Access
 
 Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. 
 
 Desired Qualifications 
• Bachelors Degree in education, counseling, or related field
• Knowledge of and experience with student services functions at a community college setting such as financial aid, advising, counseling
• Current driver's license, insurance and access to reliable automobile during work hours for transportation to off-campus sites
• Training and experience using student information systems and student resources platforms such as EAB navigate, Jenzabar: CARS or CX, TOPS Pro, or Banner
• Experience using remote meeting platforms, preferably Zoom

• Knowledge of health and wellness, student advocacy, food and housing insecurity, and community support resources.
• Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a variety of audiences.
• Knowledge of and ability to use remote meeting platforms such as Zoom
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including active listening skills                

 

Working Conditions and Important Information

 

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a normal office environment while sitting at a computer terminal. Visual eye strain and repetitive hand/wrist motion for data entry and keyboarding functions.

 

Salary:
Initial salary placement will be based on years of relevant full-time equivalent experience at the sole discretion of the College, per the guidelines in the applicable Handbook or Collective Bargaining Agreement.  Please include all relevant full and part-time experience in your application that you want the College to review towards potential placement.  Hired employees will not have an opportunity to update past experience or appeal initial placement after the time of hire.
