POSITION SUMMARY 

Assist and support welding technology instructor in providing instruction and provide assistance to individual students as needed/requested. 

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

The list of essential functions is intended to be representative of the tasks performed by this position. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position. 

  1.  Assists students in completing assigned class activities by observing the student performing the assigned tasks and asking questions of the student, making sure the student knows correct materials, tools, equipment and methods to complete the assignment. 
  2. Observes student work for proper safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment.  
  3. Updates safety procedures and practices and maintains MSDS information and stocks safety supplies for sale to students,( i.e., gloves, safety glasses, earplugs). 
  4. Maintains assigned work area in a clean and safe condition. Performs regular maintenance to laboratory equipment and machines, or coordinates needed repairs. Maintains supplies, parts and tools needed for laboratory to include placing orders, obtaining bids and/or purchasing items. 
  5. May oversee work of student employees. 
  6. Prepares lab so assignments may be demonstrated by setting up the correct materials, tools, and equipment needed for the assignments. May assist staff with preparation of lab instructional and testing materials set up. 
  7. In absence of instructor, oversees welding class(es) as an open lab. 
  8. Performs other related duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISES THE FOLLOWING STAFF 

This position does not supervise but may direct the work of student workers 

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent 
  • Two (2) years of related industry experience with industry sponsored in-service education and train-the-trainer programs; or a combination of formal training/education and experience.

Successful completion of an OSHA standard industrial lift truck operator safety course, within six (6) months of hire. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  •  A minimum of one year experience working with training employees in the industry or in an institutional setting involving mentoring activities and/or set up of real time work situations for assessment testing is desirable. 
  • Community College training/certifications in welding 
  •  Knowledge of other industrial manufacturing methods and techniques including mechanical and hydraulic systems. 
  •  A certificate of completion of an OSHA standard industrial lift truck operator safety course

 

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications:  

  • Knowledge of welding laboratory. 
  • Knowledge of safety practices, and proper operation and techniques for use of equipment in the welding industry. 
  • Ability to communicate, interact with and assist students. 
  • Ability to set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a safe, clean and functional manner. 
  • Ability to follow directions when setting up student projects. 
  • Ability to function independently.  
  • Ability to support students in the use of welding equipment and supplies, and personal protective equipment. 
  • Ability to operate all position welding using either oxy-acetylene or arc equipment.  
  • Ability to support students one-to-one and in small groups.  
  • Ability to communicate in both formal and informal setting with students, instructors, and other interested parties. 
  • Ability to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required:

  •  To sit, see and talk or hear
  •  Have the physical ability to stand for extended periods of time and operate demanding equipment  
  • Seventy percent (70%) or more of the time duties require standing, and thirty percent (30%) requires some kneeling, stooping, or crouching
  • Perform lifting of light to medium weight (10-50 pounds)
  • Have mobility to move between offices, classrooms, and floors
  • Use hands to finger, handle or operate computers, objects, tools or controls
  •  reach with hands and arms.  

Specific vision and hearing abilities required by this job include:

  • Close vision and the ability to adjust focus, 
  • Complete and maintain various types of records
  • Hear the conversational voice and effectively communicate responses. 

Work is performed in college industrial labs and classrooms with frequent contact with people 

  • Exposure to noise extremes forty percent (40%) of the time, 
  • health or safety hazards exist twenty percent(20%) of time.  

Assignment will include presence at all OCCC locations and may include evening and weekend work. 

Travel between College sites and other locations will be required. 

 

Occasional travel and overnight stays outside of Lincoln County may be required for training and other purposes.
