Academic Advisor

Job Description

Under supervision of the Campus Dean for Student Affairs. the Academic Advisor is responsible for: 

  •  Advising students on academic requirements and selection of courses;
    •    Assisting students in developing and personalizing and education plan;
    •    Disseminates information on institutional policies and procedures;
    •    Reviews and interprets placement and other standardized test scores, unofficial transcripts, and course prerequisites;
    •    Understands the institution's interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.;
    •    Performs and interprets degree audits;
    •    Understands graduation requirements for programs;
    •    Monitors student registration activities and recommends solutions to academic difficulties;
    •    Coordinates communications to the students regarding advisement, academic calendar, and other related issues;
    •    Maintains accurate electronic records of interactions with students
    •    Serves as student advocate when appropriate;
    •    Refers students to the appropriate specialized staff for such issues as financial aid assistance, career advisement, admissions processes, business          office questions;
    •    Stays abreast of changing institutional information including admissions requirements, new programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates,         costs, expanding facilities, updates in college-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandates;
    •    Engages in professional development activities, including but not limited to memberships in professional organizations; attendance at conferences,         workshops, division, and department training sessions; stay current with information technology skills;
    •    Participates in the planning, implementation, and the evaluation of the academic advisement program's goals and objectives;
    •    Participates in institutional student development and retention programs;
    •    Serves as resource for faculty/staff;
    •    Completes administrative reports as assigned;
    •    Providing information by telephone, written correspondence and in person to interested parties regarding enrollment procedures and requirements;
    •    Performs and completes tasks and assignments, including complex processing of documents and/or transactions, associated with personnel support       functions for assigned organizational unit or program (answering incoming calls, processing purchase orders, travel arrangements, expense                     statements, etc.);
    •    Enters data from forms, records, reports, and/or other sources into the computer for purposes such as maintaining databases;
    •    Monitors use of and maintains supplies, equipment and/or facilities for assigned work unit or program area; and
    •    Performing other duties as assigned

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

  •  Bachelor's degree in a related field *and* two (2) years of related work experience.
    •    NOTE:  Experience may substitue for the degree on a year-for-year basis.
    •    Experience working with the public in a customer service environment, exceptional customer focus is a must.
    •    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    •    Skill in operation of computers and job related software programs
    •    Skill and ability to perform complex and varied duties in an efficient and confidential manner
    •    Skill in managing multiple priorities
    •    Decision making and problem solving skills

 

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to minimum)

  •  Knowledge of BANNER student information software-especially as it pertains to admissions, advisement, and registration.
    •    Prior experience in college admissions

 

Physical Demands

The employee occasionally lifts or moves objects of a light to medium weight. Work is typically performed in an office environment with intermittent sitting, standing, or walking in various settings. The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds. Full range of hand and finger motion may be utilized for data entry purposes. 

 

Salary/Benefits
Benefits include paid state holidays, annual and sick leave, and the State of Georgia Flexible Benefits package. Positions are contingent upon funding.
