Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director of STEM Learning Resources, this position will be responsible for creating, revising and implementing basic Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or Geoscience projects/experiments conducted by college students enrolled in their first year of college, and beyond. In collaboration with STEM faculty and staff, this position will provide direction and guidance to ensure smoothly functioning day-to-day operations of the laboratory/space assigned. This will include reviewing current literature, designing and executing experiments, collecting data, supervising students, providing written and oral feedback to students and other stakeholders, completing projects as needed, among other duties.
The ideal candidate will actively participate in all required meetings and activities with a focus on improving student success and access as expected of this college service.
They will be proactive in making decisions within the scope of the job, solvingunexpected problems and carrying on department business independently. Thecandidate selected might be required to communicate with different academicdepartments as well as external local corporations.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Manage and supervise program participants and other staff. This requires planning and implementation of processes, protocols, experiments, reports and budgets. Take into consideration student and faculty needs when providing overall direction and guidance to the day-to-day operations, problem-solving and making decisions to ensure that students are successful and have a meaningful experience. Recommend and execute program plans and objectives to efficiently and effectively achieve department- and school-wide goals.
• Manage diverse and multiple projects simultaneously, including Contract Research Organization (CRO) projects and sponsored student projects.
• Implement ideas and processes that will grow the program beyond original charge.
• Provide excellent leadership skills with the ability to work with, motivate and support students, faculty and staff.
• Oversee Standard Operating Procedures document revision and quality control/assurance for reagents and other lab supplies as needed.
• Perform and report cost analysis for the projects as needed.
• Work with faculty and staff to promote effective laboratory/space management and to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with all stakeholders.
• Propose, discuss and share experimental designs for (CRO) contracts and internal projects with stakeholders, college employees and faculty, as required.
• Write and maintain technical reports, protocols and other documentation related to assigned activities.
• Provide advanced oral and written communication skills to work effectively with college administrators, faculty, staff, students and public-school district personnel.
• Develop and sustain partnership with school districts and universities for the purposes of sharing resources and cultivating multiple career paths and entry/exit points for program participants.
• Meet with clients, attend meetings, and giving presentations either locally or as part of the
STEM Learning department activities at national meetings, if required.
• Communicate with CRO clients and with the Director of STEM Learning regarding project materials, program progress, and other relevant information that pertains to the success of the program.
• Develop and implement departmental policies and guidelines, objectives, and goals.
• Identify, interpret, and discuss primary literature and review articles with other staff, faculty, program participants, and other stakeholders so that the program consists of efficient and effective learning practices.
• Maintain experimental designs that will allow program participants to complete assigned projects as well as meet course and learning objectives as appropriate.
• Provide knowledge of research/project methodologies, model systems, and instrumentation commonly used in an experiment/project setting.
• As a manager, be responsible for keeping the assigned project space clean, organized, operational, and safe.
• Develop and revise project objectives and protocols for CRO contracts and other projects as required.
• Collaborate with faculty and staff to assess the program effectiveness in teaching student techniques, protocols, and experimental/project design. Communicate effectively and often with program participants by providing appropriate feedback and direction, answering questions and advising them as needed. This includes writing reports and delivering oral presentations to students, faculty, staff and external stakeholders.
• Manage and mentor student interns, volunteers and other part-time employees as each completes the required tasks and acquires the required skills to become competent and successful.
• Manage student learning outcomes and tracking student progress.
• Track program participants’ development regarding experimental/project techniques and hours accumulated.
• Evaluate the progress of program participants and provide appropriate feedback and direction, answering questions and advising program participants as they develop and revise common protocols and prepare written reports and/or presentations.
• Develop and revise participant training and evaluation materials as part of supporting student training and educational experience.

Minimum Qualifications

- Master’s degree
- Three (3) years of direct, paid, full-time experience.
Part-time experience is acceptable and is measured on a pro-rated basis.

Preferred Qualifications

- Doctor of Philosophy in STEM discipline.
- One (1) to two (2) years of post-doctoral experience in an academic or industry laboratory.

• Able to supervise and work effectively with students of various background and skill
sets.
• Able to develop and monitor budgets for projects.
• Able to enforce college and departmental policy and procedures effectively and
diplomatically.
• Able to conduct independent research including design, implementation, and
troubleshooting of experiments.
• Able to produce quality work while setting and meeting appropriate deadlines.
• Work individually with students, interns and volunteers on project design, execution,
and data analysis.
• Able to maintain a positive attitude and patiently encourage students as they learn the
process of conducting research or a project.
• Able to work with faculty from the School of Science, Math and Engineering to develop
student projects.
• Possess strong interpersonal problem-solving and public relations skills.
• Have good problem-solving, decision-making skills and detail-oriented approach to
accurately analyze situations and adopt an effective and ethical course of action.
• Possess excellent time management skills with the ability to work independently on
multiple tasks simultaneously, and under stress.
• Ability to resolve conflict, manage confidential information, and make appropriate and
ethical decisions.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic
background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
