Position Summary

Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
The role of the Senior Network Engineer (SNE) is to provide the design, setup, implementation, maintenance and ongoing improvement of the College’s network infrastructure and network support devices. The SNE also assists in the design and process creation related to the server infrastructure. The SNE will design, implement and maintain the college’s security infrastructure, including firewalls and other security related devices and procedures. The SNE’s ensures the continual availability of the systems and services while coordinating maintenance and service windows with the College community.

Supervisory Responsibility:
The SNE will act as a team lead for technical decisions and technical design of the college infrastructure and services but will not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Requirements:
1. Directly related experience (may be earned concurrently) in the following areas:
a. Five (5) years experience with network infrastructure configuration and maintenance within a large network infrastructure environment.
b. One (1) year experience with system administration on Linux based systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or similar) or Microsoft Windows based systems
2. Must demonstrate the knowledge, skills and ability to accomplish the essential duties and major accountability of the position.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
1. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in a computer/network/technical or related field.
2. Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Juniper Enterprise Routing and Switching, Professional (JNCIP-ENT) or equivalent or more advanced certification from a different network manufacture
3. Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) or Juniper Enterprise Routing and Switching, Expert (JNCIE-ENT) or equivalent certification from a different manufacture
4. Experience in managing a network infrastructure in a Multi homed network environment
5. Experience in managing a Multiprotocol Label Switching network (MPLS)
6. Experience in managing a Palo Alto firewall
7. Experience managing a Wide Area Network (WAN)
8. Experience working with Packetfence or other Network Access Control (NAC) solution
9. Experience working in an educational organization.
10. Experience administering Asterisk soft-PBX.
11. Experience administering a 3CX soft-PBX.
12. Experience administering Active Directory.
13. Experience in a virtual infrastructure environment such as VMware Infrastructure or VMware vSphere.
14. Experience administering Google G Suite for Education.
15. Experience configuring and working with Border Gateway Patrol (BGP) and other advanced routing techniques
16. Demonstrated ability to identify and resolve difficult network and system related problems using troubleshooting and decision making.
17. Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
18. Three (3) years’ experience with system administration on Linux based systems (Red Hat Enterprise Linux or similar).

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Physical Requirements:
With or without accommodation, the employee in this position needs to move about and position him/herself to access files and operate office machinery. The employee must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time and operate a computer workstation and telephone. Due to the managerial/customer service aspect of this position, it is necessary to communicate both in person and over the telephone with a variety of people each day. It is also essential to occasionally transport up to fifty (50) pounds. The employee must, with or without accommodation, have the ability to detect that the College’s information systems are operating efficiently. This position works in a normal office environment but is occasionally exposed to moving parts and loud noise from technology devices and systems.

The minimum reasoning skills necessary for this position include the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization does not exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The minimum language skills necessary for this position include the ability to read and interpret documents such as technical procedure manuals.

Work Schedule

52 Weeks, 40-hours per week, Monday through Friday. Will be required to work a variable schedule/varying hours to meet operational needs. This position is on call 24/7, and will either carry a College provided cell phone or provide a personal cell phone number. Work hours will be determined by the Director of Network and Web Services. Occasional travel is required for workshops, seminars, training, presentations, consulting and/or advising, and visiting branch and extensions sites.
