Position Summary

Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
The role of the Systems/Database Administrator is to provide the setup, implementation, maintenance and on-going improvement of the College’s servers, infrastructure and services. These services include but are not limited to: Windows Active Directory, Google Workspace configuration and management, Email service configuration and management, Synchronization services between AD and Google workspace, Firewall, Portal services, Vmware infrastructure, Domain Name Services, Printing services, Business Intelligence support services, Surveillance systems, System Backup and Replication services for Disaster Recovery and Database server infrastructure. The System Administrator will also assist other positions within ITS with troubleshooting servers/services as well as acting as a backup during unplanned absences. The System/Database Administrator’s role is to ensure smooth and continual availability of the systems and services they manage while coordinating maintenance and service windows with the College community.


Minimum Requirements

  1. Directly related experience (may be earned concurrently) in the following areas:
    1. 5 years experience with system administration on Microsoft (Windows Server) systems and/or Linux systems
    2. One year experience with server maintenance and hardware, server terminology and procedures, basic methods of troubleshooting and technical assistance
  2. Demonstrated positive communication and teamwork skills. Have the ability to multitask and prioritize.
  3. Strong initiative and the ability to work successfully in an environment with minimal direction.
  4. Demonstrated work history of providing high quality, strong customer-oriented services including:
    1. problem solving orientation
    2. strong listening skills
    3. history of coordinated work effort with extensive follow-through and follow-up
    4. experience identifying customer needs
    5. effective communication and people skills.
  5. Ability and interest to function effectively as a team player.
  6. Ability to work successfully in an environment without detailed direction and in the absence of work process documentation.
  7. Ability to train individuals or small groups.
  8. Ability to function effectively as a team player in a cross-functional team.
  9. Demonstrated experience as an individual who establishes a course of action for self to accomplish organizational goals, achieving maximum results and effectively using available resources.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

  1. Possession Associate degree or equivalent work experience in a related field
  2. Decisions require substantial analysis of data or information requiring development and application of several alternative methods involving major allocation of resources. Ingenuity, imagination and collaboration are required with outcomes impacting major strategic goals or direction of College initiatives.
  3. Works directly with or develops confidential information, which requires regular use of discretion. Improper disclosure might cause embarrassment or disruption to the organization.
  4. An extensive background in technology use and technology trends.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

The employee must be able to work at a desk for long periods of time and operate a computer workstation and telephone. Due to the heavy customer service aspect of this position, it is necessary to communicate clearly both in person, in written form, and over the phone or via video with a large variety of people each day. The employee, on occasion, must be able to lift and carry, a 40 pound item.

Work Schedule

52 Weeks, 40-hours per week, Monday through Friday. May be required to work a variable schedule/varying hours to meet operational needs. This position is on call 24/7, and will either carry a College provided cell phone or provide a personal cell phone number. Work hours will be determined by the Director of Network Services. Occasional travel is required for workshops, seminars, training, presentations, consulting and/or advising, and visiting branch and extensions sites. Considerable irregularity of hours due to system upgrades, down time, or inoperable.
