Job Summary

Responsible for directing maintenance and operation of college grounds at several College campuses and sites across a nearly 40-mile span; Directs, and manages, full and part time employees providing benchmarks, departmental policy development, and forward-thinking direction and strategy for department staff, over 270 acres of campus grounds and tree assets, 70 million gallons of water resources, and nearly 2 million dollars of equipment. Responsible for identifying new trends and implementing best practices regarding landscape management, water reduction, equipment optimization and maintenance, and management of personnel; Order and keep an inventory of grounds supplies; coordinate and track fertilization schedules; coordinate work force distribution; maintain database of inventory of existing plant materials, grounds supplies, maintenance and use of heavy and light equipment; submittal of personnel records, part-time and overtime.

Critical role in the implementation of new and renovated landscape projects, providing guidance and direction and a standardized approach to both project managers and landscape architects and providing input and oversite of projects to ensure the project aligns with department and institutional goals. Manage and maintain computerized irrigation platform, utilizing best practices in protecting our plant material assets while meeting water reduction benchmarks set by the state; supervision of parking lot sweeping and sweeper operation; provide direction, and outline expectations with (5) supervisors, arborists, and mechanic; create and implement equipment and safety training standards and outline expectations with both part and full time employees; manage departmental budget and identify trends that may impact budget from year to year; develop and implement a pesticide safety program to properly use pesticides and herbicides; ensure proper training of employees with regard to safe use of insecticides, herbicides and equipment; Responsible for day to day and long term maintenance of heavy and small equipment; Directs and oversees snow removal operations of all parking lots and main walking paths, working with several departments providing a centralized message, objectives and oversite to all departments; Maintain awareness and compliance with legislation and regulations impacting our water usage, workplace safety, and hiring and management practices; Identify trends in new technology and provide insight and data driven justification for departmental strategies; proactively pursue other available funding opportunities via grants from local, state, and federal funding; Monitor and evaluate the health of plant materials, and direct treatment utilizing IPM standards based on signs, symptoms, soil analysis, and experience.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Utilize intuitive critical thinking in the creative management process to identify and mitigate hazards, and inefficiencies, and advance acceptance of improved processes.
Provide direction, prioritization, and timing for grounds crew, irrigation crew, arborist, and mechanic operations at multiple campuses, which include mowing, watering, weeding, fertilizing, spraying herbicides and insecticides, trimming, edging, tree pruning maintenance of sprinkler systems, handling emergency situations, ordering supplies, ordering new and maintaining/repairing existing equipment.
Provide direction for full-time Supervisors and other employees, work schedules, time reporting and other records.
Providing customer service, communication, and follow up as the representative for the Grounds Department with other departments, faculty, staff, administrators, and neighboring properties.
Provide scope, design review, oversite, and final approval for installation of new and renovated landscape projects and irrigation systems.
Grounds maintenance which does include inspecting grounds for defects and repairs, establishing and maintaining preventative maintenance programs, and maintenance repair which may include heavy equipment, power equipment, hand tools, sprinkler systems, grounds keeping, etc.; also performing minor grounds duties such as maintaining outside of buildings and facilities, including parking lots.
1 on 1 with supervisors to provide direction, and assist in problem solving, site condition/inspection and progress review.
Provide leadership, direction, and accountability to all departments involved in snow removal for roadways, parking lots, sidewalks, building ramps, offsite campuses, etc.
Provide oversite for contracted services including herbicide applications, tree pruning and removal, and tree plantings. Coordinates with outside contractors during the courses of new construction to interface with existing systems and planting materials where affected.
Update, and oversee the collection of data, and GIS layers including Tree plantings and removals, Grass areas, parking lot areas, walkways, irrigation isolation valves and main line.
Manage the grounds department work order and preventative maintenance portion of the facilities system.
Review contract documents prior to bidding to ensure compliance with College Design Standards, planting and irrigation standards, and state and college procurement policy.
Maintain, program, train new staff, and operate the College computerized irrigation systems, including weather-station interfaces.
Hiring, recruiting, training, and position management of (12) fulltime positions and (30) part-time/seasonal positions.
Monitor and evaluate the health of plant materials, and direct treatment utilizing IPM standards based on signs, symptoms, soil analysis, and experience.
Compile and update data to support future needs and identify trends impacting the grounds department and institution at large.
Other duties as assigned, which does include hiring new full and part-time employees, answering policy questions, assisting with training, solving problems which may arise, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with emphasis on plant and horticulture management.

Eight (8) to Ten (10) years of direct, paid, full time grounds maintenance supervisory, management, or director level experience.

Valid Class C Utah Drivers license or the ability to obtain one upon offer of position.

Substitutions acceptable for education / work experience on a 2:1 basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Utah Class A Commercial Driver’s License preferred, pesticide license, ISA certified arborist, QWEL certification.

Ability to communicate with customers, employees, inspectors and other state and local government representatives in a way that gains their trust and respect; Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and other departments to create alignment between institutional objectives and departmental objectives;

Ability to read and understand construction documents;

Knowledge and ability to operate, program, and interpret data from a centralized computer irrigation control system;

Knowledge and skill to recognize and order planting materials by their common and botanical names; Ability to interpret a soil analysis and make recommendations; Ability to identify pathogens in plant materials and recommend measures to mitigate damage;

Use and understand the Facilities work order/preventive maintenance system;

Maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies;

Be honest and trustworthy;

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College;

Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
