Job Summary

Consistent with SLCC: Vision to be a model for inclusive and transformative education; Mission to engage and support students in educational pathways: and Values of Collaboration, Community, Inclusivity, Learning, Integrity, and Trust, the Advisor II will work with PACE (Partnerships for Accessing College Education) Program — a college access program that serves 9-12 grade students who qualify for free/reduced lunch and/or first-generation college students. The advisor’s responsibilities includes developing and implementing programming for PACE scholars. This responsibility includes outreach, recruitment, eligibility, case management, individualized success plans, reporting, outcomes assessment and updating services using data and best practices. The advisor’s responsibilities includes implementing programming for PACE high school scholars including math readiness platforms iReady and/or MathSpace, assessments, modules and workshops. This advisor will work with assigned High Schools and their feeder middle/junior high schools to recruit eligible students and prioritize underrepresented students who demonstrate need.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Provide academic, personal, and career information and advisement; assist students in developing educational plans, career goals, and study and life skills; develop and present workshops for participants and parents in careers, college programs, and financial aid; provide college admission and financial aid application information and assistance; plan and implement campus visits and field trips. Implement iReady and/or Math Space programs for all PACE high school students including student assessment and modules.
Assist with reports, data collection, program goals, outcomes and evaluation; develop new activities and services to recruit and meet project needs; assist with the promotion, collaboration, maintain student files and documentation of eligibility and services; track and document participants’ academic progress.
Identify, recruit and select project participants, determine eligibility for services; assess students’ needs for services; administer and interpret diagnostic tests and inventories; provide outreach and reentry services to secondary and postsecondary dropouts;
Develop and maintain liaisons with parents and target school personnel regarding participants needs and problems; provide promotional activities, outreach and coordination with TRIO & PACE department and Student Affairs Division, target school personnel, and community organizations; Pipeline PACE high school seniors to SLCC TRIO Programs and/or Bruin Scholars cohorts.
Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, with emphasis in education, psychology, counseling or related field.
Two (2) to four (4) years of full time direct, paid, advising experience. (Part time experience can be considered on prorated basis.)
Reliable transportation and/or valid driver’s license is required to travel to multiple schools and program activity sites.
Trade off 2:1 in experience/education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

a. Master’s degree preferred.
b. Two (2) years direct, paid, full-time work experience preferred in dealing with diverse populations in education, social services, or human relations setting.
c. Higher education experience preferred.
d. Knowledge of K-12 system preferred.
e. Experience teaching and/or counseling in junior or high school setting with
economically and educationally disadvantaged students strongly preferred.
f. Direct experience in PowerSchool and Discovery Gradebook.
e. Bilingual preferred, Spanish speaking.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

a. Addressing the needs, concerns, & cultural backgrounds of low income, first generation college, ethnically diverse students
b. Microsoft Office Suite and presentation media including laptops and LCD projectors
c. Student development, learning strategies and advising techniques;
d. Experience with case management;BANNER, StudentAccess and Starfish software.
e. Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
f. SLCC pathways, programs and degree options, FAFSA process, HB144, resources for undocumented/DACAmented students and families
g. Work a flexible schedule which may include occasional evenings and weekends;
h. Work with confidential and sensitive information;
i. Work independently and as a team member;
j. Utah public education core curriculum and high school graduation requirement
k. Interpretation of assessment instruments (interest, academic, career, etc.);
l. Impact of culture on learning, learning styles, and strategies
m. knowledge and implementation of high impact practices to increase college retention and completion rates
n. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
o. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff including those with disabilities

Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties

a.Occasional driving to different on and off-campus locations within the Salt Lake valley is required.
b. Need reliable transportation.
c. Ability to work nights and weekends on occasion.
d. Finalist will be required to pass a background/fingerprint check with SLCC, Salt Lake City School District and Granite School District.
