Job Description

Highline College is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to provide leadership and student engagement strategies within an equity framework for Center for Leadership (CLS). CLS serves as a hub to student engagement and provides oversight for the management and resources for student funded co-curricular and extracurricular offerings at the college.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Life, the Director for Center for Leadership and Service is responsible for providing leadership, management, and vision for CLS. This position will provide direct student engagement services to students, in addition to administrative duties that include: professional staff supervision and development, student leadership team advising, student engagement planning, and assessment, and committee work.

Key job duties will include: 1) Co-coordinate Core Services Student Leadership Team recruitment, training, and on-going paraprofessional development initiatives; 2) providing educational and leadership programming designed to foster holistic development and 3) create and support systems that develop student leaders sense of belonging; 4) advise and serve as the official administrator for the Services and Activities Fee Fund including budget authority for the entire S&A index.

The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and will have significant experience working with diverse populations.

This is a full time, exempt at will position.

Essential Tasks
Reporting directly to the Associate Dean of Student life, this position will:
Student Leadership Development

  • Co-direct, develop, implement and manage a student leadership program, specifically the training and development of Core services leaders, including annual training, weekly meetings, evaluation, and recruitment;
  • Coordinate student groups to generate and structure a comprehensive events and activities calendar for the wider campus community, with special emphasis on building student leaders and campus communities;
  • Supervise all CLS professional staff employees to ensure that campus values of learning, service, leadership, multiculturalism, and equity is vibrant within the spectrum for department offerings;
  • Co-coordinate summer and on-going training for Core Services Student Leaders.
  • Design and facilitate curriculum for leadership training sessions;
  • Provide direction to the Leadership Development Programming team.

Leadership Advising

  • Provides leadership, guidance, and supervision to the Associated Students of Highline College Student Government and develops programs that facilitate the involvement of students in the college's shared governance process;
  • Serves as the primary advisor to the Student Council;
  • Ensure the development and continuity of Student Government by directing, advising and guiding student leaders regarding college policies and procedures, maintaining the accuracy and full compliance of the Financial Code, Constitution, and By-Laws.

Services & Activities Fee Budget

  • Ensures the effective development and expenditure of services and activities fees consistent with state laws and established guidelines and regulations;
  • Serve as the budget authority for all 522 student-funded programs;
  • Provides guidance to the S&A Committee and serves as an ex-officio representative member.

Professional Development

  • Actively participate in educational and professional activities to network, learn best practices, build knowledge and expand resources, including annual conferences and meetings;
  • Serve on department, division and college committees;
  • Participate in regional, state and national professional organizations pertinent to the field(s). Represent Highline College at the state level Council for Unions and Student Programs;
  • Ensure the usage of the Highline Student Union is in alignment with the original intent voted by students and also responsive to the current needs of students;
  • Build interdepartmental relationships and partnerships with staff, faculty, Instruction, Administrative Services, Student Services, and Institutional Advancement to promote student success, leadership engagement, equity, and inclusion;
  • Interpret college policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations, ensuring compliance;
  • Participate in commencement related activities as assigned by the Associate Dean of Student Life or the Vice President of Student Services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of student development theory, specifically that which relates to student leadership, identity, and organizational development;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively supervise and build student leaders and communities of student leaders;
  • Ability to provide immediate, clear and direct performance feed back to employees;
  • Knowledge and commitment to the role, mission, and goals of a community college education;
  • Ability to develop collaborative campus relationships and ability to function as an effective team member;
  • Computer literate using database management, word processing, spreadsheet, and office management applications with the ability to apply current technology to student services functions;
  • Effective problem-solving skills;
  • Strong written and oral communications skills;
  • Budgetary and financial management experience.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Education or related fields (Liberal Studies, Leadership Management, Psychology); AND
  • 3 years of experience in Student Activities and/or Leadership Development programs.

Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.A. or M.Ed. in Student Development, Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Organizational Development or related degree;
  • Experience working effectively in a shared governance model;
  • Experience providing co-curricular programs in a community college setting;
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-cultural and/or international education activities.
