Position Summary

 

The Student Support Services Academic/Career Advisor is responsible for advising Student Support Services participants on issues related to transition to college, academic issues such as coursework and program choices, and career choice. The Advisor will accomplish these responsibilities both through in-person guidance, as well as by developing handouts, written materials, and other resources for students.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Provide career development and job search advising to Student Support Services students, both in individual and group settings.
  • Help Student Support Services participants to understand the academic and administrative processes, procedures, and expectations of College programs, and in planning and developing a course of study, including degree/certificate plans.
  • Teach study skills and career development seminars for Student Support Services participants.
  • In order to perform these essential functions, the Student Support Services Academic/Career Advisor must be present at work. Therefore, attendance is an essential function.

 

Qualifications

 

  • Minimum of a Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in academic advising or related services in a higher education or student development setting.
  • Must have the ability to form effective working relationships with students and other employees, and must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Must be proficient in the use of administrative computing systems and commonly used programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to successfully work with at-risk students and address the full spectrum of their educational and career needs.
  • Must have a demonstrated ability to develop, plan, and conduct workshops and events.
  • Must be able to take initiative and work independently.
  • Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of student information.
  • Must have knowledge of TRiO and Student Support Services programming.
  • Must have an understanding of and commitment to the community college philosophy.

  • Completed Wallace State Community College employment application with three work references
  • Résumé
  • Cover letter describing specifically how your experience and qualifications meet the qualifications outlined for the position
  • Verification of experience (employment) will be required after the interview process and prior to an offer of employment. Letter(s) must come from current and/or former employers, verifying employment experience to meet minimum required qualifications. Letter(s) must include employment dates and job title and be on official letterhead with an authorized personnel signature.
  • Separate transcripts from each college attended (photocopies will suffice until employed)

 The College reserves the right to fill the position within four months of the stated deadline date or not to fill the position due to budgetary or operational considerations.
