Job Summary

The Manager 1, Healing Arts Lab position at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) manages and maintains the Nursing Arts Lab, including the high-fidelity human simulation models for students to practice and acquire psychomotor skills used in the nursing profession. Monitors budget expenditures and purchases equipment and supplies. Provides training to faculty and students on proper use of lab equipment.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

  • Manage inventory, maintain capital and non-capital assets which includes lab supplies for each semester.
  • Responsible for lab facility, equipment/supplies and maintenance of lab facility, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain stock levels of lab supplies and equipment to meet maintenance needs in the lab. Order and restock supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Inventory lab deliveries and maintain records for purchase request dates, date of purchase, delivery date, and anticipate future orders.
  • Manage storage areas to a high standard and select appropriate storage areas for supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure lab space is used in accordance with fire code and policies set forth by SLCC.
  • Setup and utilize functionality of equipment as appropriate for the requirements of each simulation activity and overall activities of the center.
  • Maintain the clinical and educational equipment to a high standard including cleaning and basic maintenance.
  • Operate and troubleshoot hospital equipment used in the simulation/in situ environment (i.e.., beds, pumps, ventilators, etc.).
  • Control, program, maintain, and troubleshoot patient simulators (voice and physiological parameters) during scenario-based training sessions, open days, and demonstrations.
  • Maintain problems with equipment and follow set policies in returning equipment for repair.
  • Develop and maintain maintenance records including warranty information and maintenance history.
  • Supervise and train Lab Technicians and Student Interns in use of equipment, supplies, technology, and manikins used in the lab.
  • Assign lab leads a list of labs that need to be setup and prepared daily. At the end of the day, “tear down” lab, return unused supplies to inventory, and clean/sanitize all used equipment.
  • Identify mechanisms to appropriately separate simulation and actual patient care materials (e.g., equipment, supplies, and patient information).
  • Provide floor plans/blueprints/photographs of actual or proposed facilities utilized by program.
  • Collaborate with administrative assistant on available budget to submit purchase requests for prioritized list of needed supplies, assets, and other materials.
  • Monitor budget expenditures and coordinate purchases with the Associate Dean and Administrative Assistant.
  • Recommend purchase/s for equipment, supplies, and materials required for simulation-based sessions.
  • Provide training sessions and instructions to faculty and students on proper use of lab equipment.
  • Train faculty on basic maintenance/troubleshooting of simulation equipment.
  • Provide students with instruction on correct behaviors within the lab and report issues to program coordinator.
  • Participate in the various committees (i.e.., Lab Committee, Simulation Committee, Program Coordination, Strategic Planning, and Utah’s Simulation Coalition.)
  • Collaborate with other programs in the School of Health Sciences to promote inter-professional education.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with vendors and clinical partners.
  • Attend the annual or bi-annual Gaumard sponsored training week each summer.
  • Attend vendor training sessions, conferences, etc. for training on simulation, hospital, and AV/IT equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant business, technical, or clinical field.
Zero (0) to three (3) years experience in working as a lab coordinator or aide.
Experience can be traded on a 1:1 basis for education requirement.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2) or more years experience as a technician in a simulation center including experience in maintaining equipment inventory and maintenance schedule.
One (1) year computer information technology experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to install, operate, maintain and troubleshoot simulation, hospital, IT/AV equipment, and software used in a clinical education environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated adaptability and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must be self-directed.
  • Ability to acquire new skills and learn new procedures.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student body.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
