Montgomery College is currently recruiting for two (2) Building Service Supervisors. One position is located on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus-3rd shift, Monday - Friday (10 pm – 6:30 am.), and the other position is located on the Rockville campus- day shift, Monday-Friday (6:00 am – 2:30 pm.). Both positions are exempt, non-bargaining grade 23 positions.

Under supervision and/or direction, the Building Services Supervisor will supervise staff engaged in the provision of routine maintenance, minor repairs, and other custodial and/or janitorial services for one or more campus facilities. Responsibilities include establishing work schedules, training and supervising staff, inspecting completed work, and maintaining work records. Contacts and interacts with the College-wide community, vendors, and the public, providing information, service, and assistance.

List of Functions:

  • Perform various supervisory functions for assigned staff such as assigning specific duties to staff, establishing priorities/deadlines and monitoring and evaluating work performance.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and recommend commendation, formal and informal coaching, and disciplinary action.
  • Evaluate the training needs of staff and coordinate/conduct in-house training. Provide oversight for contractors (obtain/review bids, supervise and guide work, complete purchase orders, inspect, and sign off completed jobs). Supervise all campus painting activities of assigned staff.
  • Maintain chemical safety data sheets (SDS) documentation. Operate College vehicles, various tools and types of equipment.  
  •   Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and application of the methods, procedures, and techniques of building custodial and/or janitorial services, tools, equipment, and materials used, and hazard/safety precautions.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with institutional cleaning/janitorial practices, cleaning chemicals, and their proper use.
  • Excellent leadership skills and the ability to instruct, train, and work cooperatively with others as well as communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills including familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), the Internet, and Windows based applications may be required.
  • Excellent customer service skills required.

Minimum Education, Training and Experience Required:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D and any combination of education, training, and experience providing understanding of the trade and the ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience performing and leading others in building custodial work.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license is required and evidence of a good driving record.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to effectively operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
  •  Ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium to heavy objects weighing up to 50lbs without assistance and 50 to 100lbs with assistance, as well as squat, walk, climb (stairs and ladders), bend, crouch, stoop, kneel, stand, grasp, reach, pull and repetitive motions.
  • Use of hands/arms and legs in using work equipment and the tools and materials of the trade.

Work Environment:

Work is typically performed indoors; however, some work is performed outdoors in various types of weather with occasional exposure to varying noise levels, controlled and hazardous substances, and other chemicals.

Salary Range:   $50,847 to $81,334 (annually). Initial salary placement is based upon candidate education, experience and internal equity. New hires are typically placed between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range.
