Summary of Position

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) invites applications and nominations for an open rank tenure-track position in Recreation Management and Policy beginning in August 2023. As New Hampshire’s flagship R1 institution, UNH actively creates an educational environment that fosters diversity, inclusion, and quality engagement for all. This position adheres to a nine-month, academic year contract.

The successful candidate will join the department to serve the core curriculum, the Program and Event Management undergraduate option, and the graduate program. This position has the potential for a joint appointment or affiliation with Cooperative Extension to help lead and study initiatives in New Hampshire that focus on recreation as a driver of community and economic development. We are seeking established or emerging scholars with a strong background in municipal planning, public engagement, community-based recreation and sport programs, nonprofit administration, organizational management, and destination development. Candidates should demonstrate areas of research and/or teaching expertise that align with at least one of the Department’s current priority areas, including recreation agency management, inclusion and access to recreation, municipal planning and economic development, public health outcomes, commercial recreation and tourism, or event planning. Duties include maintaining an active and productive research program, collaborating with Cooperative Extension faculty and community engagement teams, teaching courses in the undergraduate and graduate core and options; advising undergraduate and graduate students; serving on Department, College, and University committees; and engaging in professional and public service.

Acceptable Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate degree before August 2023, with at least one academic degree in recreation/leisure studies or a closely related field
  • Evidence of the ability to engage in scholarly activity, research, and peer-reviewed publication
  • Evidence of involvement in and leadership of externally funded research projects
  • Experience teaching recreation/leisure studies courses at that collegiate level in multiple environments, including face-to-face and online
  • Evidence of the ability to work collaboratively with diverse communities and communicate to public audiences

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of ability to support research through externally funded grants and contracts
  • Demonstration of a commitment to engaged scholarship including collaboration across academic and Extension units and with local/state/federal/industry partners
  • Familiarity with collaborative scholarship in public health and related disciplines;
  • Teaching experience in an undergraduate and graduate core curriculum and in specialization areas (e.g., community recreation, organizational behavior and management, nonprofit administration, commercial recreation and tourism, festival and event planning)
  • Experience with curriculum and program development at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Professional work experience in the field of recreation, leisure management, and/or community engagement
