ACES Student Success Coordinator

Montgomery College

Job Description

Job Description

Montgomery College has an immediate need for an ACES Student Success Coordinator for the Achieving Academic Excellence and Success Program on the Takoma Park/Silver Spring campus. The work schedule is typically 8:30am-5:00pm with occasional weekend and evening hours. This is a non-bargaining, exempt, grade 27 position. Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, diversity, and inclusiveness.

ACES student success coordinators collaborate with stakeholders both internal and external to MC to provide direct services to students through a large-scale cooperative pathway program between Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), MC, and the Universities at Shady Grove (USG). They provide seamless services at the transition points between all three institutions to create a coordinated service network spanning Montgomery County.

ACES student success coordinators provide comprehensive, coordinated services to traditionally underserved student populations in Montgomery County (e.g., first-generation, low-income, and minority students) through an intrusive case management model. Coordinators on MC’s campuses carry an approximate caseload of 175 to 250 active students. Additionally, they maintain contact with inactive students to facilitate their return to MC.  The ACES student success coordinator will design, develop, and deliver a series of workshops to promote student success in their first and second years at MC. Additionally, they organize various events both to support student growth and to celebrate their achievements.

  • Maintain close working relationships with their counterparts at USG to aid students in transitioning to their transfer institutions and accessing the services available there
  • Establish and maintain relationships with the representatives of special programs that benefit MC students (e.g., Future Link), working together to address the needs of shared student caseloads
  • Guide students in navigating the student experience at MC and in identifying and overcoming potential barriers to success in higher education
  • Support students in developing realistic long-term academic and career goals, as well as designing concrete, actionable plans to achieve them based on input from counselors/advisers
  • Develop and individualized coaching plan for each student, accounting for stated academic/career goals, intended transfer institutions, financial resources and needs, and other salient factors
  • Meet with students to address academic concerns, resolve questions on financial aid, conduct ongoing academic planning efforts, and connect students with available support services (e.g., Learning Centers, Counseling and Advising, Disability Support Services, and Financial Aid)
  • Facilitate the development of academic skills, including self-advocacy, organization, time management, study skills, critical thinking, and academic planning
  • Assist students in transferring to colleges and universities, including collaborating on transfer applications, writing letters of recommendation, and liaising with advisers at transfer institutions
  • Collaborate with ACES HS Staff to assist students in understanding the higher education process and completing the administrative steps necessary for successful matriculation to MC
  • Re-establish sustained contact with inactive and “stop out” students to encourage their return to MC and their completion of a college credential
