THE COLLEGE
Palo Verde College is a publicly supported 2-year college located in the beautiful Southeastern California desert. Yearly enrollment is approximately7,000 students (full and part-time).

NATURE OF THE POSITION
The instructor will teach classes within the approved discipline(s). In addition, the instructor shall be responsible for creating, maintaining and updating curricula relevant to the assigned instructional area. Further, the instructor will participate in all appropriate faculty functions, including non-teaching assignments, office hours, and committee meetings. This position may require day, evening, weekend, correspondence and on-line assignments.

Examples of Duties

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Develop and Implement curricula in order to prepare students adequately for the challenges presented within all aspects of the nursing field.
2. Prepare course materials such as syllabi, instructional plans, homework assignments, exams, and handouts.
3. Evaluate and revise curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction where necessary to keep up with the current needs of nursing.
4. Supervise, advise, and mentor students in the classroom, labs, and clinical setting.
5. Assess clinical education needs and patient and client teaching needs utilizing a variety of methods.
6. Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
7. Demonstrate patient care in clinical settings.
8. Prepare and deliver lectures to students on topics such as pharmacology and health care practices.
9. Keep abreast of developments in their field by reading current literature, networking, and participating in professional development.
10. Evaluate and grade students’ class work, laboratory and clinical work, exams, and assignments.
11. Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
12. Maintain regularly scheduled office hours in order to advise and assist students.
13. Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
14. Participate in campus and community events.
15. Perform administrative duties such as serving as an Assistant Director, or Department Chair.
16. Performs other duties associated with full-time employment.

Educational/Experience Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. Possession of a Master’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, education or administration;
2. Direct patient care experience within the previous five (5) years in the nursing area to which he or she is assigned, which can be met by: (A) One (1) year continuous, full-time or its equivalent experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse in the designated nursing area; or (B) One (1) academic year of registered nurse level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area or its equivalent that demonstrate clinical competency; and
3. Completion of at least one (1) years’ experience teaching courses related to registered nursing or completion of a post-baccalaureate course which includes practice in teaching registered nursing.
4. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

PLEASE NOTE: Generally, a Master’s degree is a minimum requirement for academic areas of instruction. Equivalencies may be granted upon application and examination by the Academic Senate.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
 1. Valid California driver’s license.
2. Valid California Registered Nursing License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. Teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.
2. A firm commitment to the needs of students with diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds and levels of ability with multi-cultural teaching experience.
3. Additional academic preparation enabling instructor to teach in an additional discipline.

LOCATION
Palo Verde College is located in the City of Blythe at one of the busiest entrance points to California. The college is located in a desert oasis adjacent to the beautiful Colorado River and the Palo Verde Valley. Blythe, and the fertile Palo Verde Valley, is primarily a farming and ranching area. Boating, fishing and hunting attract many tourists. The Palo Verde Valley is centrally located between Phoenix and Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Mexican border. The valley’s great climate, with more than 350 days of sunshine and mild winters, attracts thousands of winter visitors every year

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. The physical demands and work environment are typical of an instructional job in a classroom and office environment. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, as listed above, with or without a reasonable accommodation.

CLASSIFICATION & SALARY
1. Full-time (177-day academic year).
2. Tenure track academic position.
3. Placement on the academic salary schedule will be determined by education and experience.
