Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or a related field.

Work Experience

Minimum of three years of admissions, advising, or career counseling experience at a community college, postsecondary institution, or related experience in a similar role.


Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual, Spanish Speaking.

4. Demonstrated skill in working with students to achieve personal, educational, and career goals;
5. Knowledge of academic and career advising standards, and student-centered best practices, designed to support students through enrollment processes leading to the identification of appropriate pathways and program interests;
6. Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective advising and student belongingness;
7. Competence in computer technologies, such as Microsoft Office, and student information systems (e.g., Ellucian Colleague, Self-Service, etc.);
8. Awareness of the needs and expectations of students and their support systems, and colleagues;
9. Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive interpersonal relationships throughout the college and the community; and
10. Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours and travel to remote locations, consistent with student needs.

Essential Functions

Academic Advisors support students throughout the enrollment (continuing education and/or curriculum) process, provide academic advising, and engage students in career exploration; aligning students’ personal, academic, and career goals with short- and long-term opportunities offered at the College. By incorporating an appreciative and intrusive advising approach, advisors partner with students to provide options that meet students’ individual needs.

Job Duties

Advising Responsibilities
1. Conduct one-on-one advising sessions with students to discuss interests and provide advising support focused on setting and achieving academic and/or career goals;
2. Comprehensively review students’ records to ensure readiness for enrollment and provide services allowing registration access for desired coursework/programs;
3. Engage in communication that establishes belongingness and leads to positive and effective advising, student engagement, retention, and persistence;
4. Deliver individual, group, and class (on-site, virtual) presentations;
5. Comply with FERPA guidelines and policies by discerning confidential communication to protect students’ information;
6. Establish and maintain effective and positive interpersonal relationships with students, their support systems, the college, community, and business and industry partners;
7. Be knowledgeable of all on-campus and/or off-campus resources (e.g., Industry, Community, Governmental, Faith Based, etc.) to inform students of availability and accessibility; 
8. Align delivery of advising services with the College’s Mission, Vision, and Values, Strategic Plan, Equity and Inclusion Action Plan, and Guided Career Pathways framework;
9. Engage students in thorough enrollment activities and make referrals to additional support services;
10. Determine the best personalized, proactive advising approach to serve students and determine student satisfaction through assessment and evaluation;
11. Work collaboratively with other offices and departments to assist students with onboarding and admissions, course selection, registration, and current enrollment standings (waitlisted, tuition and fees, financial aid status, etc.), recommending referrals as appropriate; and
12. Understand the One-College Model and maintain familiarity with all continuing education and curriculum opportunities offered at the College.
Institutional Responsibilities
1. Be knowledgeable of college policies, procedures, practices and provide guidance in a student-centered manner or make appropriate referrals to address student needs;
2. Facilitate new student orientation sessions;
3. Collaborate with and provide appropriate support to College operations during high volume and peak seasons;
4. Partner with colleagues across the college to stay abreast of changes to curricula, prerequisites, admission criteria, program offerings, etc. Share knowledge of changes with advising colleagues;
5. Use various technologies to provide a contemporary presentation of orientation materials, including online delivery;
6. Advise with an understanding of the College’s mission and its commitment to the open-door philosophy, student-first practices, and student success;
7. Participate in program, departmental, divisional and institutional meetings and other activities;
8. Maintain accurate student records; processing reports, forms, and all other required documentation (electronic or paper) in a timely, efficient manner, checking for the completeness of all data;
9. Stay current in the field by taking advantage of in-service training and other opportunities for professional development, including attendance at off-campus activities;
10. Maintain appropriate communication and supportive relationships with all other units of the division and the College, and aid in carrying out their respective functions;
11. Create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students, employees, and the public; and
12. Assume other necessary responsibilities and perform additional tasks as assigned.

? Manual dexterity for operating a keyboard and other office equipment; and
? Infrequent travel between buildings on campus, to other campuses, locally or out-of-town to attend meetings and conferences.

Required Working Hours

Complete a 40-hour work week. Some evening and weekends required.

Hiring Range

$44,463 - $52,800
