Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Chemistry Department is one of the largest and most complex departments in the Division of Academic Affairs. There are 43 faculty members, 44 SHRA and EHRA staff positions, 260 graduate students, 33 postdoctoral research associates, 700 undergraduate majors, and an annual total of approximately 10,000 registrations by all students in classroom and laboratory courses. The Department is housed in five buildings with over 580,000 sq. feet of space. The faculty participate in teaching assignments which involve an average of 200 students per faculty member per semester. The majority of faculty are research active and supervise graduate students working on their Masters or Ph.D. degrees, undergraduate students carrying out independent research and honors programs, research technicians and postdoctoral research associates. Primarily the research is funded by federal and private agencies such as NSF, NIH, Army, Navy, DOE, PRF and involves expenditures of more than nineteen million dollars annually. A total of over thirty-two million dollars from all sources is expended annually in the Department.
Position Summary
This position is in the Chemistry Department in the Division of Academic Affairs. The position will manage a portfolio of research projects for active research faculty in the department. This position will coordinate research proposal applications following agency guidelines thru University & departmental submission process currently the RAMSES system. Application packets will be compiled/formatted to comply with funding agency guidelines using a variety of agency funding mechanisms application procedures. 
The position will perform a variety of duties to support the life cycle of awarded sponsored research program projects including monitoring expenditures and analyze the burn-rate on sponsored projects, communicating financial data and discussing project needs with the Pl; liaising with OSR to manage project budget, complying with agency guidelines, documenting cost share, maintaining a standard set of protocols for compliance standards for each project, serving as a departmental contact to OSR on assigned Pl projects; and analyzing financial data thru University applications to perform day to day program project monitoring. 
The position will perform funding swaps as needed to manage Pl research projects, assist in submitting funding agency progress reports, preform project close-out activities and submit and track closing entries needed thru university applications. This position will review all/approve/initiate actions for assigned Pl research projects throughout life cycle of project. The position will assist Pl’s with no-cost extension requests at least 3 months prior to the ending of a project, monitor sub-recipient payments. The position will pro-actively prepare for project close-out 6 months in advance to the ending of a research project for efficient and accurate spend down. This position will approve all non-personnel transactions that disburse funds from portfolio of Pl sponsored research projects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This position requires demonstrated knowledge and experience with accounting practices, established government and departmental budgeting and bookkeeping processes and procedures. Financial accounting expertise is essential to be successful in this position. General knowledge and experience with office methods and procedures is required. The person in this position must have the demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work. The demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships with faculty and other employees is also required. Also essential is the ability to present information clearly and concisely in oral and written form, as well as experience in interpreting and applying laws, regulations, and policies to the maintenance of financial records.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The ideal candidate will preferably have:
- At least 3-5 years of current University experience in pre- and post-award sponsored research administration.
- Work experience with University financial & personnel systems, Gradstar, Infoporte, ConnectCarolina, and Excel.
- The ability to prepare & submit single & multi-investigator sponsored research applications as well as progress reports is highly desired
- The ability to maintain and balance deadlines and details on any given workday.
- An applied knowledge of Uniform Guidance Policy
- Be skilled in interacting with principal investigators, lab personnel and departmental administration.
