Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland (College Park) Department of Geographical Sciences is searching for a full-time Faculty Specialist/Sr. Faculty Specialistwho will assist the Director of NASA’s U.S.-focused agriculture Consortium, NASA Acres. This Faculty Specialist will serve as Assistant Program Coordinator and be responsible for: assisting in the day-to-day operations of a large, distributed, multi-partner Consortium; logistical planning of scientific events (meetings, workshops, meetings, and conferences); overseeing travel arrangements for Director and event attendees; editing technical reports and papers; assisting in vital communication between current Consortium and prospective researchers, sponsors, and collaborative organizations; liaising with the financial administrator on Consortium project budgets and deliverables; assisting in proposal preparation for new funding for the Consortium; providing general administrative support; as well as various other tasks as required for the successful functioning of the Consortium.

This Assistant Program Coordinator will be supporting the Director and NASA Acres Consortium from the ground up, providing a unique and exciting opportunity to help shape NASA’s work in US agriculture. This position is 12-month, full-time status and offers excellent benefits, including but not limited to health insurance, generous leave package from the first year (accrued at 22 days-annual leave, 3 days-personal leave & 14 days-sick leave), retirement subsidy (ORP/Pension System), tuition remission and many professional development opportunities. The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established from $65,000 to $90,000 per year, depending on qualifications.

Envisioned Duties for this Position:
  • Assisting the Director with day-to-day activities including scheduling, arranging travel, expensing, and coordinating new funding proposals
  • Communicating with Consortium partners to track and report on project progress
  • Distilling information into key takeaways and action points for Consortium leadership
  • Serving as the main administrative point of contact for the Consortium
  • Logistical planning and oversight of the execution of internal and external Consortium events and meetings
  • Coordinating with other Consortium support personnel, e.g. Consortium communications lead, financial coordinator, etc.
  • Coordinating with the Consortium counterparts at NASA Headquarters and NASA Harvest
  • Formulating & implementing program and project management strategies in coordination with and under guidance of leadership.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
Have project and/or program coordination experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to execute Director priorities independently
  • Ability to independently gather and distill Consortium-relevant information into key takeaways and decision points
  • Ability to be a proactive and creative problem solver
  • Demonstrated flexibility and openness to new activities and challenges in a highly dynamic environment

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • A degree or prior work experience in a scientific discipline related to the Consortium’s areas of work: remote sensing, satellite data applications for agriculture, agriculture broadly, and/or geospatial analysis
  • Two or more years of experience coordinating or managing research projects
  • Experience with project/program planning and management tools and software
  • Experience with administrative support
  • Relationship management, particularly in distributed and remote environment

There is also a location preference for the Colorado Front Range (Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins areas), with a backup location of the DC metro area. Please note, however, that very well-qualified candidates from any US region are encouraged to apply.
