Theatre Technical Director and Operations Manager
The Theatre Arts Technical Director and Operations Manager, in consultation with the faculty in the Theatre Arts program, initiates, plans, and participates in a variety of supervisorial and stagecraft duties required for theatrical productions.
The Theatre Arts Technical Director and Operations Manager serves as the Theatre Program Technical Director/Production Manager (TD/PM) annually for Theatre Department productions, typically consisting of two or more productions per semester. The Technical Director performs a variety of complex and highly technical functions requiring creativity, ingenuity, and resourcefulness, as well as supervision of students, staff, and volunteers. The successful candidate for this position will direct all aspects of theatre operations and technical direction including but not limited to: safety, shop operations, and operations on-stage and backstage. Maintains Theatre Program calendar and production budgets in coordination with Theatre Arts Department Chair and Performing Arts Complex Coordinator. Assists and advises production directors in a theatre laboratory setting; and works in successful collaboration with the Performing Arts Complex Coordinator, faculty, community organizations, and artistic personnel.
This is a 12-month position that reports to the Dean. This is an exempt position, and it is frequently required to work irregular or extended work hours, including evenings and weekends, depending on performance schedules. This position is continuously responsible for the safety of others.
Example of Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Meets with artistic directors and designers to understand design needs, and to draft construction drawings of scenic elements including platforms, wagons, walls, stairs, and other structural elements
Assists in the design, fabrication, and implementation of stage scenery, paint, and properties for all Theatre Department productions.
Manages the scheduling and fabrication of scenic elements and properties with additional staff and student workers.
Manages the necessary purchases/rentals needed for productions.
Advises, mentors, and encourages students with regard to curriculum, research projects, internship opportunities, and career possibilities.
Supervises and mentors students in all aspects of stagecraft including set construction, design, scenic painting, props, backdrops, welding, electrics, lighting, sound, projection, rigging, and shop maintenance.
Recruits directs, and supervises guest designers, professional experts, overhires, and other temporary employees as needed in coordination with the Theatre Arts Department Chair;
Supervises all personnel in their use and operation of Theatre Arts Department equipment and software including lighting, sound, recording, and projection equipment;
Schedules and supervises all load-ins and strikes for department productions, including mounting of technical elements of productions such as rigging, sets, lights, sound, and special effects. Works with Performing Arts Complex Coordinator to ensure safety measures are followed by others using the space;
Maintains an inventory and oversees stock/storage of light/sound equipment, scenery, and properties. Operates, inspects, maintains and repairs such theatrical equipment as lighting equipment, sound equipment, cyclorama, theatrical rigging, and stage and seating areas. Recommends equipment purchase and upgrading;
Maintains Theatre Program calendar and production budgets in coordination with Theatre Arts Department Chair and Performing Arts Complex Coordinator;
Assists in the development and implementation of guidelines and procedures related to the use and operation of technical support facilities and equipment for performing arts productions, including the scene shop, the costume shop, all lighting and sound equipment, etc. Ensures that the tools and equipment are used in a safe manner and that safety precautions and procedures are followed.
Demonstrate an understanding of, sensitivity to, and appreciation for the diverse academic, ethnic, socio-economic, disability and gender diversity of students and staff attending and working on a community college campus, as well as the greater community.
Serve on college committees as assigned. Represent the District at local, regional and state meetings, as assigned.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
A bachelor's degree in theatre arts, technical theatre, fine arts, lighting, stage design or related field and three (3) years of work experience in two or more of the following areas: prop design and construction, stage set design, stage set construction, rigging, lighting, sound, and operation/use of stage equipment or equivalent.
Expertise and experience in the design and implementation of scenic design, set construction, scenic paint, and/or properties.
Knowledge of and experience in lighting design and sound
Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre Arts or related discipline.
Shop Management experience
Principles, techniques, methods and equipment used in technical aspects of theatrical production, including the design and administration of set construction, prop construction, lighting, sound, rigging, scenic painting, and special effects related to theatrical productions and live events.
Proficiency and experience in CAD, Vectorworks, QLab and Google suite preferred.
Principles of Installing, operating, maintaining and repairing contemporary lighting consoles, sound consoles, audio/visual and multimedia equipment, and other theatrical equipment
Proper use and care of hand and power tools used in stage production
Operational methods of scene shops, costume shop and other theatrical support functions.
Practices of technical support scheduling for production purposes.
Principles and practices of recordkeeping and inventory control; principles and practices of budget preparation and administration; and office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications.
Supervise, participate and train students and volunteers in the use and operation of the theatre and equipment
Interact and work collaboratively with a wide variety of personalities and situations requiring diplomacy, tact, friendliness, poise, and firmness; establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
Learn and practice methods used in modernized stagecraft and stage operation
Install, operate, maintain and repair a variety of lighting, sound, and other theatrical technical equipment; safely use the tools and equipment of the craft, including a forklift
Create, interpret, and implement floor plans and working drawings for set design; design sets
Support and/or assist with lighting design - plots and lighting inventory
Enforce and be actively attentive to fire, safety and health regulations
Coordinate several projects and meet deadlines
Use appropriate and correct English spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Perform arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy
Operate efficiently office machines and equipment including computers, using various software such as CAD; maintain accurate records and files
Physical Effort/Work Environment:
Some heavy physical effort which may include frequent standing, walking and lifting of heavy (over 50 lbs.) parcels, machines or equipment; as well as frequent activities requiring full body exertion. This position includes indoor and outdoor work environment.
Position located in Monterey, California. Work required takes place primarily onsite.
Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of or ability to obtain prior to employment a valid California driver's license and must have an acceptable driving record and current vehicle insurance meeting State of California requirements. The employee must also possess a forklift and/or scissor lift operator certificate or have the ability to acquire certification within the first 5 months of employment.
Proof of Vaccination
New employees may begin working in their assignments only after the district has received proof that the person is fully vaccinated or an exemption has been approved.
Work Schedule / Supplemental Information
Exempt level position / 12 months per year
This position is located in Monterey, California. Work required from this position takes place predominantly onsite.
Schedule will flex depending upon Theatre needs. Evening and weekends required at times. Supervisor/Dean reserves the right to change schedules as needed.
Starting Salary is $6,327 - $6,978 per month, depending upon experience and qualifications.
