*THE OPPORTUNITY*
Highline College (HC) is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time tenure track faculty position in English. The successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to use equity-minded approaches to teaching and learning for racially, ethnically, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse students, including designing curriculum, pedagogy, and assessments relevant to students; valuing what students already know; and empowering students to demonstrate knowledge in multiple ways as appropriate for the discipline(s) or program(s). Candidates should be able and excited to teach composition courses in the English Department (teaching assignment may include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections); advise students in developing and monitoring their academic plans; develop curriculum in consultation with the English department; provide support to the Writing Center as needed.

HC English Department faculty teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter, advise students, and participate in College service.

This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2023.

*THE DEPARTMENT:*
The English Department is a collaborative group of faculty who implement best practices in teaching and learning. The department offers a range of courses for students who are interested in pursuing varied bachelors degrees at transfer institutions, as well as students in professional/technical programs, and those earning distribution and continuing education credits. As a department, we are committed to antiracist and culturally responsive pedagogical practices in all of our courses. HC received a federally funded, five-year Title III grant in October 2020 designed to support our guided pathways work. Essential Tasks

Duties and Responsibilities

Please address the following in your application. If you dont have experience in an academic setting, please address within the framework of your professional experience:

  • Teaching: Teach courses in the English Department (teaching assignment may include evening/weekend, online, hybrid, and off-campus sections); Provide on-campus and/or online instruction in English designed to promote effective learning;
  • Service: Participate in department, division, and other College activities, including College governance;
  • Advising: Advise students in planning their educational programs and in selecting courses; pursue appropriate professional development activities related to advising;
  • Professional development: Remain current in discipline(s)/program(s), including participating in the design, assessment, review and revision of courses, where appropriate, in response to developments in the field.

  • Self-reflective practice: Develop, assess, and analyze student achievement of course learning outcomes with goal of enhancing and improving student learning; Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the colleges program improvement/program review process;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree (or higher) in English or closely-related field from an institution with regional accreditation or its international equivalent. (Pending degrees must be verified by a letter from the granting institution.) This can include a Masters in Fine Arts (MFA), Rhetoric and Composition, Literature, or TESOL; AND
  • Experience teaching composition courses.

Desired Qualifications:*

  • Training in and/or experience teaching writing courses, composition and rhetoric, or technical writing;
  • Experience working with multilingual learners. Qualified to teach Umoja and cohort-specific models designed to serve our Black and Latinx student population;
  • Writing Center experience a plus.

Supplemental Information

SALARY, CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT, APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Salary and Benefits:
Initial annual salary placement ranges from $ 69,069-78,871 based on current contract for a standard 170-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale. Placement on the salary scale in accordance with the HC-Highline College Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.

A standard 170-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year. This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.

This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements. Conditions of Employment:
Prior to employment, the candidate must complete a sexual misconduct declaration form, and pass a sexual misconduct check.
