Job Description

This full-time faculty position may require teaching of any English course at Laurel Ridge Community College.
Faculty members are required to provide a positive, caring, and dynamic learning environment that inspires student success, values diversity, promotes community vitality and embraces Laurel Ridge Community Colleges vision and values. Faculty members are required to work to help further the goals of Laurel Ridge Community College and the English program, and support Virginia Community College System policies and procedures. Responsibilities of this position will include serving on College committees (as assigned), evaluating and revising the curriculum, participating in monthly information sessions, and assisting with program assessment and development. Faculty members are to engage in activities that demonstrate a commitment to students, community organizations, and/or the College.
Typical loads for full-time faculty at Laurel Ridge Community College are normally 15 credit hours per semester, during the academic year, with 10 office hours required each week.
Faculty members are also required to collaborate with others (full and part-time employees) to ensure teaching uniformity and continuity of material and expectations.
Duties also include academic advising, recruiting, tutoring, developing, implementing and evaluating the associate degree philosophy and objectives.
Faculty will seek out opportunities for increasing response rates on student surveys. Faculty will analyze student ratings of instruction and other student feedback, identify trends needing improvement, and implement an action plan to accomplish that improvement. Faculty will respond constructively to student comments and questions and require the same nature of response from students. Faculty will respond promptly to student emails, phone calls, or other communications (within 2 business days).
Faculty will publish office hours throughout the semester (and delineate virtual versus in-person).
Teaching schedule may include day, evening, weekend, and on and off-campus, distance learning, and web delivery.
Faculty members will be required to use state-of-the-art classroom teaching technologies. Faculty will engage in activities that keep them current in their field. Faculty will engage in activities that keep them current in pedagogy and curriculum and will participate in personal growth, wellness and/or self-care activities.

Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for the position is $48,263 to $94,806, per year, however, actual starting salary will commensurate with education and/or experience. The position is a 9 month faculty role and as such is eligible for the benefits package offered by the Commonwealth of Virginia for state agencies and the Virginia Community College System. Minimum Qualifications
  • Completed Masters Degree in English or a Master of Fine Arts in a related area. Candidates who will complete their graduate degree by the time of appointment will be considered.
  • Excellent written communication skills

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level, especially at a 2 – year institution.
  • Experience teaching English in a variety of formats, i.e. traditional in-person, hybrid, online, Hyflex, etc.
  • Experience teaching literature and/or technical writing.
