DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:

The Administration of Justice program, with an emphasis in law enforcement, provides students with the skills and knowledge to assist them in obtaining employment in a variety of areas, including local, state, and federal law enforcement, corrections, probation, and legal professions. Those already working in law enforcement may take courses at Butte College to enhance their chances for promotional advancement. Students in this program will improve their ability to read, write, and analyze situations. Students will gain a basic understanding of California laws and case law. Students who complete a two-year AS degree will have the knowledge and skills to assist them in seeking employment in many different areas of law enforcement. The Administration of Justice program is sincerely interested in maintaining and improving the high standards of the career field. We are looking for a team member who puts students first, is focused on the quality of classroom instruction, and who will work to achieve positive student outcomes in the form of a certificate and/or degree.

 

Representative Duties

 

The full-time college instructor is responsible for effective performance in the following areas:
A. General Scope of Responsibilities
  • Excellence in teaching and instruction.
  • Maintenance of professional growth and academic currency.
  • Carrying out of area, departmental and/or program responsibilities.
  • Contribution to the College as a whole in the form of College- wide service.
  • Service to the local community (optional).
  • Development and assessment of student learning outcomes

B. Teaching and Instruction - The following duties are representative of the kinds of expectations that are normally required of a full-time Butte College instructor. Certain duties are common to the everyday operational needs of the College while other activities may be required on an as needed basis. All of the duties, however, are common requirements at various times for full-time instructional positions.
  • Plans for and initiates curriculum improvements.
  • Plans for and is continually well prepared to teach.
  • Provides organized delivery of instruction.
  • Is courteous to and approachable by students.
  • Instruction is consistent with the stated and approved goals and content of the course.
  • Sticks to the subject matter of the course.
  • Shows enthusiasm for the subject matter.
  • Uses effective motivation to create a personal desire to learn the subject/skill(s).
  • Uses standards of student evaluation that are clear, fair and followed consistently throughout the course.
  • Requires levels of instructor and student effort sufficient to the mastery of the subject or skills in the course.
  • Grades and returns student assignments and tests in a reasonable period of time.
  • Makes effective use of teaching aids and materials required of students (e.g., texts, manuals, etc.).
  • Is effective as a teacher.
  • Prepares complete course outlines and syllabi.
  • Continually revises and updates course content and materials of instruction.
  • Coordinates course contents and methods with other teachers in the program/discipline.
  • Meets and assists students during office hours or by appointment or at other reasonable times.
  • Initiates and carries through with improvements to course contents and methods.
  • Initiates and/or participates in overall department-wide program development, maintenance, evaluation, revision and/or expansion.
 

C. Professional Growth and Currency
  • Instructors are required to show examples of activities which demonstrate a pattern of academic, professional, and/or technical updating or currency.
 

D. Area or Departmental Responsibilities
  • Is knowledgeable about and abides by College policies and procedures. This includes the accurate and timely submission of all reports, grades and paper work.
  • Meets deadlines and time targets.
  • Orders instructional materials, equipment and textbooks with sufficient lead times.
  • Assists in scheduling.
  • Assists in course staffing functions.
  • Provides assistance and help to other full-time, part-time and/or new instructors.
  • Coordinates plans and activities with others.
  • Provides information for the development of departmental budgets.
  • Monitors expenditures to keep within authorized budget spending appropriations.
  • Exercises good judgment in the use of and/or management of facilities, equipment and supplies.
  • Attends assigned meetings as requested.
  • Is punctual to assigned meetings.
  • Works well with peers, classified staff and administration.
  • In general, is easy and cooperative to work with.
  • Does their fair share of outside of class departmental duties and responsibilities, including contributing to unit plan and program review processes.
 

E. College-wide Service- Demonstrates a pattern of College-wide service including one or more of the
following:
  • Volunteers to serve on College committees.
  • When requested, serves on College committees and project teams.
  • Serves as a sponsor to student clubs and organizations.
  • Participates in faculty/college governance.
  • Participates on special project teams or ad hoc committees.
 

F. DEIA Self-Reflection Statement
Each faculty member will prepare aa Self-Reflection statement using the approved format as described in Appendix G2. This statement is intended to foster a conversation among colleagues that reflects on how faculty can individually and collectively work to improve student outcomes for historically under-represented and disproportionately impacted populations. The self-reflection statement should be used to help advance individual professional development and institutional dialogue on change.
 

G. The education, experience, aptitudes, skills, etc., for instructional positions differ by type of academic or vocational program. Refer to job announcements for specific job specifications.
 

H. For Cal Works instructors only, Section 7.2.1(D) 15 and Section 7.2.1(E) 2 together mean: Works closely with public employment and training service agencies to coordinate instruction and curriculum.

 

Qualifications/Requirements

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience; OR
  • Any associate degree and six years of professional experience; OR
  • Possession of a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in the applicable discipline; OR
  • The equivalent (Download PDF reader).

  • Degree must involve a general education component. Applicants without a degree or with a degree lacking the general education component may be considered if they possess other training and/or experience determined to be equivalent to the general education component. Applicants possessing such training and/or experience are encouraged to request equivalency.

  • Any master's degree.
  • Prior successful instructional or training experience teaching Administration of Justice.
  • Strong academic achievement in undergraduate and graduate level coursework.
  • Demonstrate the ability to inspire and motivate students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and ages.
  • Sensitivity to the needs and concerns that many students bring to Administration of Justice classes and the ability to address these needs and concerns effectively.
  • Commitment to a working atmosphere emphasizing respect and cooperation among colleagues.
  • Willingness to contribute to the department and the college above and beyond classroom instruction.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Experience with distance learning (online).
  • Experience with use of technology in a teaching environment.
  • Professional experience in an organization in the Administration of Justice field.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education Code § 87408.6 states that no person shall be initially employed by a community college district in an academic or classified position unless the person has submitted to an examination within the past sixty (60) days to determine that he or she is free of active tuberculosis.
  • As a condition of employment the position you are applying for will require that you provide fingerprints to the local police department. The fee charged by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the fingerprint report is the employee's responsibility. If you should be offered this position you will be asked to sign a payroll deduction form which will authorize the District to deduct the fee charged by the DOJ from your first paycheck.
