Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Associate Director of Communications serves on the communications team within the Office of Marketing and Communications, supporting the office’s work to enhance the university’s brand, advance its reputation and elevate its research profile, telling the story of the university to both internal and external audiences.

The Associate Director will support the office’s media relations efforts, including gathering and proactively pitching compelling stories, writing media materials, responding to incoming media inquiries, developing relationships with members of the media, and preparing faculty experts and university leadership for media interviews through briefings and other materials. They will also work strategically and collaboratively with colleagues within the Office of Marketing and Communications and departments across campus on communications initiatives and strategies that support the university’s strategic priorities and brand pillars.

The Associate Director will demonstrate capability to navigate a large, complex organization, write compelling content, meet deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

Education (include licenses, certifications, etc.):
  • BA or BS degree in related field

Experience:
  • Minimum of six years of relevant experience in communications.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Specialized skills:
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience working with the media.
  • Detailed-oriented with strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and implementing communications strategies.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment with multiple stakeholders, while meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality work.

Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Must have the ability to lift and small carry parcels, packages and other items, to walk short distances, and drive a vehicle to deliver and pick up materials.
