Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative Philosophy Instructor, who is active and accomplished in his or her discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, special faculty (non-tenure track) position, with an anticipated start date of September 2023.

Reporting to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Philosophy Instructor will demonstrate they have actively experimented with or are professionally interested in interventions and strategies designed to close the achievement gaps for underrepresented students. Additionally, we are seeking a candidate with a record as a successful instructor who demonstrates the strong promise of becoming a contributing member of the Arts and Sciences Division.

YVC offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, encourages cooperative learning and use of technologies in the classroom and for

e-learning. All faculty are engaged in the assessment of college goals and purposes.

 

Essential Tasks

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Philosophy
  • Successful demonstrated teaching experience in a Philosophy program
  • Commitment to the community college philosophy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching Professional Ethics or Business Ethics, Healthcare Ethics, and Critical Thinking.
  • Experience leading efforts to increase student success in Philosophy, including closing achievement gaps between demographic groups
  • Demonstrated ability to adopt teaching methods/styles that support successful learning appropriate to the student population at Yakima Valley College.
  • Experience with educational technologies.
  • Experience developing curriculum

 

Qualifications

 

JOB PROFILE:

  • The primary responsibility of the instructor shall be to teach Phil 315: Professional Ethics, Phil 112 and Phil 212: Healthcare Ethics, and Phil& 115: Critical Thinking for Education majors. Evening and weekend classes may be required
  • Impart excitement and enthusiasm into the teaching of Philosophy.
  • Adapt to a variety of teaching situations, including learning communities and other interdisciplinary approaches
  • Teach course offerings in a variety of delivery modes as required by the district. This may include online classes, hybrid classes, and classes delivered via interactive television (ITV)
  • Participation in college-wide registration and advising. Service to the district as needed
  • Availability for student consultation outside of class on a daily basis while holding a full-time faculty appointment
  • Use educational technologies effectively
  • Place primary emphasis on student learning in the design, delivery and evaluation of courses
  • Address a variety of learning styles, course materials and assessments of student learning
  • Participate in assessment of both student learning and program effectiveness
  • Communicate effectively in a multicultural setting with students, faculty colleagues, staff, and administrators

State Employees can elect to participate in the Teachers Retirement System (TRS) Plan 3 or the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP) through TIAA.
