Job Description

We are currently seeking a Lead Counselor who will advance the institution’s proud tradition of excellence in academics, student life and community service.

The Opportunity
When students encounter obstacles on the pathway to their academic, career or personal goals, they sometimes need a little help figuring out what to do.

We’re looking for a strong leader that can not only direct the department, but also provide academic, career and/or personal counseling to students. In this role, you’ll train and supervise counseling staff, lead the department in establishing and achieving annual goals and objectives, and partner with faculty to support student success.

Provides leadership and supervision to the Counseling Department. Provides counseling services to assist students identify, mitigate and/or remove barriers that impede their ability to reach their academic, career, and personal goals. Provides personal, academic, career, and crisis counseling.

Lead the Department in establishing and achieving annual goals and objectives. Responsible for developing, reviewing, modifying, and implementing Counseling Department’s procedures and guidelines.

Responsible for supervising and training Counseling, Disability, and Career Services staff to include performance evaluations.

Provide Department leadership and consistent services by implementation of institutional procedures, forms and reports.

Review progress of counselor caseloads to include persistence, retention, and success.

Manage departmental budget and serves as the signature authority. Provide oversight and approval of purchase of office supplies, counseling materials, and Disability Services’ assistive technology or adaptive equipment.

Represent the Counseling Department at System-wide meetings.

Provide brief personal counseling, and provides resources for further counseling as needed.

Provide career assessment and counseling to undecided majors and referrals from Success Course Instructors.

Assist in the development of career exploration resources to be utilized in Success Courses.

Respond to crisis situations and to Campus/College-critical incidents requiring counseling services (e.g. classroom/group debriefing, supportive counseling).

Respond to early alert referrals requiring counselor intervention.

Responsible and accountable for a case load of at-risk students (i.e. probation, suspension, repeaters, early alert).

Provide counseling to students on disciplinary probation or suspension, as referred by the Dean of Student Services, to address behaviors in violation of the Student Code of Conduct.

Provide online counseling services via email, phone and other applicable technology to include out-of-district, out-of-state, and distance education students as needed.

Maintain confidential student records.

Provide community resources and follow-up as needed.

May serve on the College Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment team.

Provide professional training opportunities and keeps Counseling Department abreast of new developments and innovation within the counseling profession.

Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.

EDUCATION
Master’s degree with a concentration in counseling (i.e. counseling, education, social work, psychology, human services, marriage & family therapy).

Counseling licensure required (i.e. LPC, LMFT, LCSW, or Licensed Psychologist). Prefer LPC, LMFT, LCSW or Licensed Psychologist with a supervisory credential/status

Completion of HCC College Leadership Program a plus.

EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years experience working with adult population, preferably in a community collegecounseling setting, includes two (2) years supervisory experience in an educational and/or social services setting supervising counseling and/or paraprofessional counseling staff.
Experience with PeopleSoft a plus.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of theory, practice, and ethics within the counseling profession.
Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
Computer proficiency in word processing (MS Word), spreadsheets (MS Excel), and Internet technologies. Proficient in the general use of personal computers.
Ability to work flexible hours to include evenings and weekends.
