Job Description

The faculty of Justice and Social Inquiry (https://sst.asu.edu/jsi-faculty) in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University-Tempe invites applications for an Instructor in Justice Studies. The anticipated start date is Fall 2023. We seek a candidate with a Ph.D. in a social sciences or humanities by the time of appointment and demonstrated excellence in teaching.

The successful candidate will have a typical teaching load of 4 courses per semester. Essential functions include teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; preparing syllabi; designing courses and developing curriculum; evaluating student work; student mentoring; holding office hours. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core courses as well as high enrollment special topics courses. The candidate will also teach in a variety of modalities.

This is an academic-year 2023-2024 appointment with an expected start date of Fall 2023. It is a full-time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university.

About the Justice and Social Inquiry program

Justice and Social Inquiry is an innovative, interdisciplinary academic program that places social justice at the center of its scholarship and teaching. Our faculty members hold degrees from a range of social science and humanities disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs. We offer a robust undergraduate program with in-person and online BS and BA degrees in Justice Studies, a minor in Justice Studies, and three undergraduate certificate programs in Economic Justice, Human Rights, and Socio-legal Studies. We also offer an MS and PhD in Justice Studies as well as a graduate certificate in Socio-Economic Justice and a PhD/JD option. Our areas of research specialization include: Citizenship, Migration and Human Rights; Globalization, Sustainability and Economic Justice; Law, Policy and Social Change; Media, Technology, and Culture; Social Identities and Communities.

About the School of Social Transformation

The School of Social Transformation (SST) was founded in 2009, bringing together diverse scholars, students and communities in African and African American Studies, Asian Pacific American studies, social and cultural pedagogy, justice and social inquiry, and women and gender studies. As one of many transdisciplinary schools unique to Arizona State University, SST focuses on transformational knowledge, including creative research approaches to themes and questions embedded in broader historical, social and cultural contexts. SST is home to 46 tenure/tenure-track and 13 non-tenure eligible faculty members that serve 600+ undergraduate majors and over 100+ doctoral and masters-level students in 19 graduate programs spanning an array of research areas. SST faculty represent humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields (including creative arts), and they are distinguished nationally and internationally for their scholarship. The faculty trains students to think, do research and teach in more complex ways about race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, social and economic justice, immigration status, and labor; to be accountable to the communities with which they engage; and to foreground social transformation on local, national, and global levels. The schools location in Arizona, where demographic changes and social issues reflect the challenges taking place nationally, especially highlights the relevance of the schools mission.
