Job Description

Virginia Western Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education operating under the Virginia Community College System, a statewide system of community colleges. The College operates under the policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Virginia Western Community College Local Advisory Board.
Virginia Western is located on a 70-acre campus in southwest Roanoke, VA. The service region of the College includes Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke County, Craig County, Franklin County, and southern Botetourt County. The College was established in 1966 and has grown from an initial enrollment of 1,352 to its current annual enrollment of over 9,000 students in credit courses and more than 1,400 enrollments in fast-track workforce and continuing education courses.
This position is designated as a first line of support to students, faculty, and employers, and will streamline how students and employers connect. The Experiential Learning Specialist (ELS) will enhance student engagement by promoting work-based learning across campus and social media platforms, meet with students to assess fit, and prepare students to meet expectations through career-readiness activities. The ELS will also maintain strong working relationships with business and industry, ensure work sites meet predetermined guidelines, and follow-up with employer partners. The ELS will perform outreach and conduct presentations to targeted business and job seeker groups to increase recruitment of students and placement for job shadowing, internships, apprenticeships and employment. The ELS will build relationships with human resource and hiring managers, engage and support faculty, and foster partnerships with workforce agencies to coordinate services for program participants. This role will contribute to the successful outcomes for adult and underrepresented student economic success, including increasing credits for work-based learning and post-graduate employment outcomes.

This is a part-time, restricted position funded by the Title III Strengthening Institutions Program (SIP) Get REAL Grant—-Refocusing Education on Adult Learners. Funding for this position has been secured through September 30, 2025. This position is dependent upon the conditions of the Get REAL grant.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
A bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Related experience in Career Services, Internship or Apprenticeship Program Management, Job Development/Placement, Recruiting, or Business Development. Experience with adult learners. Proficient use of Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, Outlook. Effective communication and writing skills; Public speaking and presentation skills. Familiarity with community college occupational and technical programs. Knowledge of community college mission and programs. Customer services skills. Ability to communicate effectively with staff, faculty and students and build relationships with business and industry.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in training and/or facilitation of workshops or classes related to career development, soft skills, pre-employment, etc. Proficient in social media platforms, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
