Job Description

Minimum of a Masters degree in English, with an emphasis in composition, or a relevant field with 18 graduate credit hours in the teaching discipline.

Experience teaching a full range of English composition courses (developmental, multilingual, multimodal).

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to relate well to learners of different ages and multicultural, multilingual backgrounds.

Demonstrate commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.

Preferred:

Journalism and student newspaper experience.

Teaching experience at the community college level.

M.A. or Ph.D. in English with emphasis in multilingual composition.

Position Type & Work Schedule:

Accountable for 33 hours per week

Exempt position 9 months

Note:

Completion of EDU250 – The Community College within two years of initial employment, or transcript indicating successful completion of a similar course at another college.

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:

Faculty members, both full-time and adjunct, are involved in continuous assessment and engaged in expanding teaching methodologies and delivery systems to improve student academic success and retention. Full-time faculty will follow an 80-10-10 model, where they actively participate in departmental/divisional meetings and activities; student recruitment/retention/advisement activities; community/partner relationships; and activities that promote and support the district-wide academic goals of the local populations and the College. Faculty may be asked to teach on various campuses, via in-person, online, hybrid, and virtual learning environments, as directed by the needs of the community for any given semester; course scheduling may include daytime, evenings, and/or weekends.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

Teaching Responsibility

Serve students. Teach 15 equated load hours/semester (to include material and preparation time; equates typically to 5 courses/semester); develop and grade exams and instruments to evaluate student learning and progress; submit student grades/progress as required by the programs/policies of the instruction area.

Maintain a minimum of 5 student office hours/week/semester load and direct interaction with students in a formal learning environment for a 15-equated load hour schedule.

Remain current in his/her discipline, updating course content when appropriate.

College Responsibility

Collaborate with Division Lead and departmental faculty, Associate Dean, and Director of Curriculum, Assessment, & Scheduling to identify student-learning outcomes, develop assessment processes and tools; incorporate results to enhance/modify instruction and material, degree program, course cluster, and/or certificate program as appropriate.

Work and coordinate with Student Services and Lead faculty to actively participate in student recruitment, retention, and advisement activities/programs.

Participate in institutional functions such as, but not limited to, college committees, task forces, club sponsorships, facilitation of advisory committees, student/faculty recruitment, and mentoring of new and adjunct faculty. Participation may be directed by the Lead faculty or Associate Dean.

Maintain 10 positive interaction hours/per week and attend graduation ceremonies.

Community Responsibility

Participate in professional developmental activities outside the College, such as, but not limited to, community events, boards, clubs, and conferences. Coordinate such participation with the Lead faculty, Associate Dean, or Vice President for Learning Services, as appropriate.

Serve on local and state advisory committees as directed by the Lead faculty.

Additional Responsibility

Participate in adjunct faculty recruitment.

Serve as a resource for adjunct faculty.

Work with Department and Division faculty to help develop and support internship, research, and work experiences for students at all levels.

Work with Lead faculty and departmental faculty to develop and implement Open Educational Resources (OER) content.

Develop an active program of study that will complement and extend the current offerings in Yuma Co.
