Job Description
Under general supervision of the Chief Instructional Officer (CIO) and within the Liberal Arts and Sciences Division, the English instructor may teach classes in all areas of English, including pre-collegiate and college-level composition and literature. The instructor may also develop and teach courses in their area of expertise. In addition to any area of specialization, the person in this position should have experience teaching students of different academic levels and diverse backgrounds, and should have a repertoire of effective teaching methods. The instructor works with other English faculty to coordinate aspects of the English program.

Required Qualifications
Completion of one of the following:
  • Masters in English, composition, literature, comparative literature, OR
  • Bachelors in any of the above AND Masters in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism, OR the equivalent.

 


Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic and socio-economic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Essential Duties
  • Teach a spectrum of core English degree courses and general education courses including pre-collegiate and college-level composition, introduction to literature, and courses in specific literary areas.
  • Create and implement culturally responsive and equity minded course material, teaching practices, and learning assessment strategies that enhance student success and persistence toward academic/career goals and that help close equity gaps and promote social justice.
  • Participate in the continuing development of instructional support strategies, including tutoring, and supplemental instruction.
  • Complete program reviews, budget development and the assessment of student learning at the course and program levels.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other full-time and associate faculty on scheduling, department goals, instructional strategies and developments in the field.
  • Conduct activities supporting English majors and improving student retention.
  • Fulfill non-teaching assignments such as scheduled office hours, selection of textbooks, evaluation of course materials, curriculum development, student advising, program promotion, and participation in departmental meetings, on college committees and in shared governance, including the Academic Senate.
  • Assist in the development of recruitment materials and participate in recruitment activities.
  • Participate in professional growth and remain current in the subject area(s).
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to develop and teach cross-disciplinary courses and/or programs within an area of Communications Studies, or other areas closely related to English (e.g., humanities, modern languages).
  • Ability to develop and teach pre-collegiate and college-level composition courses
  • Evidence of an enthusiastic commitment to teaching at the college level.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Earned Ph.D.
  • Online teaching experience and/or practice in web-based writing support services.
  • Experience integrating technology and supplemental learning support in classroom instruction.

 

Salary Range

$65,906 - $117,568 annually
