Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees.  Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students,  students learning English, and Continuing Education students. ABOUT THE ENGLISH DIVISION:

The English Division offers courses in developmental composition and reading, transfer-level composition, literature, cultural studies, humanities, creative writing, film, and study skills. The mission of the English Division is to support our students in developing skills and critical approaches that will enable them to engage and transform the world around them. The Division is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and administration. We integrate diverse literary and cultural texts in our curriculum, affirm students multiple literacies, and foster pedagogical innovation. The English Division promotes a culture of mutual respect and collegiality among 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 25-30 adjunct faculty, who bring a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. The Divisions impact and leadership extend to the campus and community, including through the operation of the Writing & Reading Center.
 
 

 

Position Responsibilities

The English division is seeking candidates for an adjunct position to teach an hybrid section of ENGL 101 with a focus on “Contemporary Asian America” for Fall 2023 (with potential for teaching in subsequent quarters depending on availability of course sections).
 
Candidates should have the capacity and interest to teach a composition/writing class that intersects with one or more of the following areas of expertise: Asian American rhetoric and literacies, Asian American Literature, Asian American Studies, Asian diaspora, anti-Asian violence, diverse and intersectional identities within the Asian American community, among others.
 
Candidates should be passionate about teaching and learning and committed to the mission of community colleges. Candidates should bring experience and expertise that is especially suited to enhancing the success of under-represented and marginalized student populations.

COURSE & THEME DESCRIPTIONS:
 
Engl&101: A composition course designed to teach critical reading and clear, purposeful, and effective writing. Writing tasks are related to course readings and prepare students for writing assignments in other college classes.
Theme: Contemporary Asian America—In order to advance equity and social justice, students will be able to examine their own and others identities, behaviors, and/or cultural perspectives as they connect to power, privilege, and/or resistance with regard to contemporary Asian America through
reading, writing, and discussion.

COURSE MODALITY:
 
This class is a hybrid format, comprising both face-to-face sessions and the Canvas LMS platform.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
 

• Masters Degree in English or Composition/Rhetoric. Closely related degrees may be considered if applicant can demonstrate coursework in critical areas.
• Experience and expertise in working with Asian and Asian American communities 
• Commitment to equity and inclusion in working with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and identities.

 
 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  
 

• Experience teaching composition classes at the college level.
• Experience with online teaching using Canvas or equivalent CMS platforms
