The purpose of this position is to teach primarily English composition classes, at various levels according to the needs of the institution and department. Classes may include general composition, developmental composition, workplace writing, or literature. Additional responsibilities of the position include curriculum development, scheduled office hours, participation in department and division meetings, college committees and task groups, assessment of learning outcomes, advising of students for degree and career success, and other related duties as assigned by the administration.

The 2.4-acre Omak campus includes a state-of-the-art science lab, a library with extensive on-line research capabilities, full time instructional technology support, an active student government, and classroom buildings. The campus is adjacent to the Colville Indian Reservation and the college has an important partnership with the Colville Tribes. The campus is located in a rural town of about 6000 inhabitants, nestled in a lovely valley approximately an hour from the Canadian border, 2 hours from the main campus in Wenatchee, and 3-4 hours from Spokane and Seattle. The areas economy is a diversified mix of agriculture, forestry, tourism, government services, and small businesses. The climate is fairly dry and temperatures are moderate, with excellent opportunities for outdoor activities in the surrounding mountains. If you like country living, this is the place!

 

Essential Functions

  • Adhere to, promote and effectively teach official curricula as determined by the English department and approved by the college.
  • Provide learning activities and appropriate evaluation of student progress toward attaining the learning outcomes and abilities set by the department and the college.
  • Work successfully with students with academic difficulties to develop college level skills.
  • Effectively participate in departmental and college teaching and learning activities.
  • Effectively apply quality teaching and learning processes and principles.
  • Maintain and submit appropriate individual student records as required.
  • Apply electronic informational retrieval (EIR) technologies to effective teaching and learning.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and administration.
  • Develop a professional improvement plan and participate in continuous improvement activities.
  • Commit to equity-minded pedagogy and addressing the needs of disproportionately impacted populations as priorities of the department.
  • Understand and be sensitive to meeting the needs of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic background of the students, community, and employee population.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A masters degree in English or Composition/Rhetoric from an accredited institution of graduate education, or a masters degree in a related discipline with significant graduate level course work in English or Composition/Rhetoric.
  • Experience in and commitment to teach the process of essay and academic writing to diverse students.
  • One year of teaching college-level English or two years as a graduate teaching assistant in a university composition program.
  • Commitment to teaching students at all developmental levels.
  • Ability to function in a multi-lingual and multi-cultural environment and support diversity and inclusion of all students, especially those of historically marginalized identity groups.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successful post-secondary teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.
  • Competency and experience working in a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, gender and racial/ethnic backgrounds and those with physical, emotional and/or learning disabilities.
  • Experience creating digital content (such as Word/PDF documents and web and learning management system content as appropriate to the role) in accessible formats.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English.

 

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position contracted on an annual basis. The salary for the position is determined by placement on the Wenatchee Valley College full-time faculty schedule (currently $62,543 – 74,192* for a 9-month, 175-day contract). Class assignments may include day, evening, and distance courses. This position is scheduled to begin Fall quarter (September) 2023.

*assuming a 9.2% general wage increase.
