THE COLLEGE AND THE DISTRICT:
Mt. San Jacinto Community College enrolls approximately 27,000 students each academic year and has a highly diverse student population that reflects the communities it serves. We have one (1) full time and two (2) part time opportunities for a Campus Safety Officer to serve our Menifee and Temecula, CA campusesUnder general supervision, the Campus Safety Officer will perform assignments related to providing safety and emergency response services to students, faculty, and staff; provide for the security of real and personal property of the District; to observe and report.  All criminal matters are to be referred to the MSJC contracted law enforcement agency, Riverside County Sheriff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Patrol buildings and grounds on foot or with a District vehicle
  • Complete incident reports, forms, and other descriptive annotations
  • Make inspection rounds in assigned areas to prevent unauthorized entry into District buildings and unauthorized removal of, or damage to, District property
  • Report criminal and/or unusual occurrences to the proper contracted law enforcement agency
  • Assist law enforcement agencies on campus as the occasion demands
  • Enforce parking regulations in campus parking lots
  • Maintain crowd control and traffic control at social and athletic events
  • Keep informed of campus activities and provide information to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Implement and supervise the contracted security services needed for classes, registration, football games, etc.
  • Render assistance to students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Maintain a friendly and supportive atmosphere for students, faculty, staff, and visitors
  • Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 
The incumbent should possess working knowledge of:
  • Public safety including law enforcement methods
  • Traffic control and safety procedures applicable to a campus environment
  • Existing criminal codes and laws
  • Basic understanding of California laws relevant to California Community College public safety/security
  • Crime prevention and first aid

The incumbent should possess skills in:
  • Working effectively as a team member
  • Meeting schedules and timelines
  • Communicating effectively both orally and in writing
  • Maintaining documentation and records
  • Handling multiple assignments simultaneously and set priorities based on customer needs
 
The incumbent should possess the ability to:
  • Quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations related to work performed
  • Assess public safety or other hazardous situation and determine an appropriate course of action
  • Prepare clear and concise procedural reports
  • Read, write, and follow oral and written directions and instructions
  • Act quickly in emergency or critical situations
  • Read, interpret, and implement the provisions of an injury and illness prevention program
  • Analyze situations, adopt an effective course of action, and see it through to completion
  • Work with young people and large groups of diverse socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Remain continually mobile and moving
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others, including those from a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A high school diploma or GED; AND
  2. Two (2) years of professional experience in providing security, military or law enforcement services; AND
  3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

SUBSTITUTIONS
Substitutions for meeting the minimum qualifications for the professional experiencerequirement are allowed, as follows:
  • Formal training in security or public safety  (*attach transcript, certificate of completion, etc.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Position requires some responsibility working evening, weekend, Holiday, and extended hours during peak periods
  2. Position requires flexibility to work overtime and/or changes in work schedule in order to meet departmental needs
  3. Possession of or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire, a valid California driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District 
    • If selected, employment commencement is contingent upon successful enrollment in the District’s DMV Pull Program.   Employees enrolled in the DMV Pull Program MUST continuously maintain a driving record that meets District requirements set forth in the current policy as it relates to allowable types of infractions and points. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Possession of:
    1. First Aid Certificate
    2. Adult CPR Certificate
  2. Ability to quickly learn and apply campus rules and regulations related to work performed
  3. Professional experience in
    1. Preparing clear and concise procedural reports
    2. Vehicle parking enforcement and traffic control which includes extensive interaction with staff and the public
    3. Campus safety/security environment in a community college or university (or other related community agency)
    4. Assessing law enforcement and identifying safety hazards
    5. Analyzing situations and acting/responding quickly and appropriately
    6. Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, and Word
  4. Prior experience in approaching work and interaction with colleagues and/or students in an equity-minded manner. Ability to promote an inclusive and welcoming work/education environment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment:  Work environment varies based on the demands and needs during each day which will include outdoor walking and standing, sitting in an office or a meeting. Work is performed primarily outdoors. May require travel from site to site and withstand constant exposure to year-round climate conditions. Walk the grounds on foot or with a District vehicle.  

Physical: Primary function requires sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an outdoor setting and travel from site to site; to stand or sit for extended periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach and twist; to lift carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight up to 50 pounds frequently; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information in person, via the radio and on the telephone.  

Vision:  See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents; and to operate assigned equipment  

Hearing:  Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
