Strive Mentor (Part Time, Temporary Hourly, Non-Benefited)

Job Description

Serve as a mentor to Native American high school students during STRIVE- a 4 day/3-night summer symposium at the COCC Bend campus.

Terms of Employment:
  • This is a part-time (<.50 FTE) Temporary Hourly/Non-Benefited position
  • Requires flexible work schedule, which may include evenings and/or weekends as well as travel throughout the district when needed.
  • COCC employees must work and reside in the state of Oregon at the time their work is being performed.
  • The College is NOT able to support Visa applications for this position. Applicants must already be eligible to work in the United States to be considered for this position.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.

 

Essential Functions:
  • Supervise students throughout symposium making sure students are meeting expectations, monitor behavior and engagement and encourage participation
  • Participate in and/or lead all activities while providing guidance to students
  • Assist STRIVE Coordinators with all logistics including check in/check-out, material distributions, etc.
  • Serve as a mentor/leader to address/listen to student concerns.
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Available for two training day(s) and additional debrief day

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Individuals must possess these knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities. The individual is expected to follow College work rules and policies.
 
  • Knowledge and skill in working effectively within Native American communities.
  • Interact professionally with students, families, professors, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using the English language with or without the use of an interpreter.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to manage conflicts within and/or between groups.
  • Experience with email, Internet, word-processing, and spreadsheets (preferably experience with MS Office Suite products).
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership activities.
  • Strong skills in working effectively in a team environment

 

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:
Work will be performed in and out of classroom settings. Mentors are required to stay on campus for the entire duration of the program. There will be physical components of the symposium including but not limited to hiking, walking, climbing stairs, siting, singing, dancing, etc. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or bachelors degree
  • Must be a current or former COCC student

 

Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish.
