Job Summary

Salt Lake Community College is located in the Salt Lake Valley, nestled in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. Therefore, the Architecture department seeks to hire an active and engaged faculty member who combines disciplinary expertise with excellence in teaching and demonstrates a capacity for inclusive, collaborative, and innovative instruction.

The selected candidate will work as a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in the Architecture department specializing in foundational architecture courses that support Architecture program students. The successful applicant will join a robust department where faculty members are reflective practitioners and knowledgeable instructors in architecture. Faculty members at Salt Lake Community College support students seeking to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year college or university by developing and maintaining high-quality, industry-standard curricula that provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in future careers.

About Salt Lake City:
Members of the faculty at Salt Lake Community College regularly enjoy the numerous activities that are readily available including: world class skiing, mountain climbing, mountain biking, miles of paved walking and biking trails throughout the vicinity, easy access to parks and lakes, southern Utah’s red rock country, and five national parks. In addition, Salt Lake City hosts professional sporting events such as NBA basketball, MLS soccer, Triple A baseball, alpine events, the Salt Lake Marathon, and was host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. Downtown Salt Lake City is also home to a variety of art galleries and theatres, the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, and various local restaurants and brewpubs. The Sundance Film Festival annually draws many thousands of attendees, making Utah one of the centers of the independent film industry.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

TEACHING:
Under general supervision, the faculty member will prepare and teach a combination of traditional lecture/lab, hybrid (on-campus/online), remote broadcast, and/or fully online courses as assigned by the department. This position will include the development and teaching of foundational architecture courses that support all Architecture program students. The faculty member will teach an average of 15 instructional units per semester (approximately 18 hours of in-class time per week during Fall and Spring semesters) in the Architecture program within the Architecture department at Salt Lake Community College. Regular full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes in accordance with established guidelines and policies. SLCC faculty participate in advising, committee assignments, academic and institutional support activities, and other duties as assigned. The assigned teaching load may consist of introductory courses, general education courses, and concurrent enrollment courses which require coordination of course curriculum paperwork, general education 5-year reviews, and adjunct training. Additional duties will include participation in Architecture program curriculum development, annual program assessments, and periodic program reviews in collaboration with other program faculty.
• Creates an effective, supportive learning environment for students regardless of delivery method.
• Teaches courses consistent with department procedures, the appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
• Provides each student with a syllabus (paper or online) on the first day of class that complies with department procedures and the course CCO.
• Teaches assigned classes during the required contact hours at the scheduled times and places.
• Demonstrates incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands?on and engaged activities).
• Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
• Promotes development of critical thinking among students.
• Actively participates in the update and production of new curriculum development and related activities as a contributing team member of the program area, department, campus, college, and state.
• Maintains and posts current teaching schedule and office hours.
• Maintains a significant campus presence, responding to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community.
• Meets with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week in-person or online (office hours).
• Is available to teach courses at times directed by academic needs of the program and availability of staffing pool. The department recommends final teaching assignments with the final decision determined by the Academic Administrator.
• Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
• Consistently works to improve course quality, design, and course integrity through participation in the college-wide assessment of student learning.
• Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid purposes) and grades.
• Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance. Informs students of progress to date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
• Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment. Prepares and submits incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
• Uses industry standard resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
• Collaborates with colleagues for instructional improvement.
• Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
• Coordinates and supervises internships and clinical experiences for students as assigned.
• Responds to voicemail and email communication promptly (generally within 1? 2 contract days).
• Meets deadlines.
• Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or college procedure.
• Partners with the college to provide innovation and improve the student learning environment.
• Promotes support for the mission, vision, values, and goals of the college by incorporating culturally?competent pedagogy and inclusive practices.

PROFESSIONAL:
Becomes familiar with and abides by all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the college.
• Maintains professional etiquette in communication with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
• Works closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures leading to success as a contributing teacher and member of the academic unit.
• Maintains necessary education, credentials, professional skills, and demonstrated teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
• Solicits feedback and implements suggestions from students and peers, when appropriate.
• Expands knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an ongoing basis.
• Promotes professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional activities (in?service activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications, and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by the department.
• Participates in the collegial mentoring relationship, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
• Engages in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role.
• Serves community partners as content area experts, when needed.
• Completes required training and participates in professional development.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties Continued

SERVICE:
The faculty member will serve their program, department, school, college, and the larger community by attending both general and discipline-specific forums and meetings. Faculty are expected to serve on college and department committees, community committees, engage with the community in multiple roles, and mentor departmental adjunct faculty. The faculty member will also participate in professional development activities that are applicable to their growth as an artist and an educator.
• Provides service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and campus committee assignments. Offers adequate service on at least one department, school, or college?wide committee.
• Promotes, models, and exhibits the College Values with colleagues, students, and community stakeholders.
• Responds to discussions and requests for department work in a timely manner (e.g., answers email, completes task assignments, etc.).
• Mentors new faculty as assigned.
• Serves on tenure sitting committees for department colleagues, when appropriate.
• Knows and enforces FERPA guidelines and other pertinent federal regulations.
• Assists in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment.
• Reviews and recommends program textbooks and/or materials.
• Attends Convocation, Professional Development Day, Commencement and other institutional meetings (e.g., department meetings).
• Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints.
• Assumes an active role in the student advising process, formal, and/or informal, per departmental guidelines.
• Meets with and updates the counseling office; updates and maintains advising materials per departmental guidelines.
• Develops and/or participates in student recruitment and retention strategies. (Career and Majors Fair, Pathways to Professions, high school workshops, program open houses, SkillsUSA, informal outreach, etc.).
• Assists with assessment of credit for prior learning, as needed (transfer credit, AP course credit, etc.).
• Participates in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
• Evaluates and revises program offerings and course materials on an ongoing basis and develops new curricula, as needed.
• Participates in strategic planning and monitors the institutional effectiveness and accountability process.
• Provides leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation, mentoring, and evaluation of part?time employees or serving on tenure sitting committees as needed.
• Reports maintenance issues for classrooms and equipment to appropriate authorities.
• Maintains inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies, storage/disposal of hazardous materials required for classes, and requests appropriate equipment repair.
• Actively participates in the informed budget process.
• Identifies budgetary needs and priorities within the program, as applicable.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B-Arch from a NAAB Accredited degree program
  • 3 years experience – working under the supervision of a licensed architect
