Job Summary

Consistent with the SLCC: Vision to be a model for inclusive and transformative education; and Values of Collaboration, Community, Inclusivity, Innovation, Integrity, and Trust, the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program Advisor 2, will provide advisement and advocacy regarding education and financial aid needs of program participants; assess individual’s program eligibility and need for academic support; develop, implement, and monitor an individual education plan leading to graduation with an Associate Degree and transfer to a 4-year institution; contribute to the successful completion of required program goals and objectives.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Using a case management model, advise and assist low income and first-generation college students, and students with disabilities in identifying their values, interests, abilities, and in clarifying their academic and career goals. Determine student eligibility and assess need for academic support. Use effective case management to assist TRIO SSS program participants in developing individual educational plans and college success skills. Following a case management model, advise and assist TRIO SSS program participants in post-secondary course selection, develop prevention and intervention strategies and schedule frequent meetings with TRIO SSS program participants to monitor individual progress toward academic goals. Orient new participants concerning program goals, tutoring services, transfer opportunities and campus resources. Maintain timely electronic dictation and file documentation of eligibility, services provided, and academic progress in confidential files. Provide information and referral services to various campus and community resources. Advise and assist TRIO SSS program participants with financial planning for post-secondary education. Provide information on financial aid programs. Assist in completing financial aid applications and verification and appeals processes.
Assess the need for tutoring and approve requests. Facilitate tutor/TRIO SSS program participant matches. Monitor progress through interventions with participants, tutors, and faculty. Provide appropriate referrals to other academic college resources.
Provide resources, education and counseling designed to improve the financial literacy and economic literacy of TRIO SSS program participants.
Provide 2 to 4 year articulation information and assist with applying for admission to, and obtaining financial assistance for enrollment in, a 4-year program of post-secondary education. Liaison with 4 year institutions in Utah to provide referrals and assist students preparing to transfer.
Assist with preparing TRIO SSS Program reports, data entry/data collection in computer software programs (i.e. BANNER, DegreeWorks, Starfish, StudentAccess) and program evaluation. Assist with the promotion, collaboration, and public relations of the TRIO SSS Program.
Other Duties as Assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, with an emphasis in social work, education, psychology, counseling or related field.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years direct, paid, full-time work experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with the target population (first generation college and low income students, including students with disabilities) in a higher education setting is preferred.
  • Experience with student data entry and retrieval system(s) preferred.
  • Experience working with a program that provides support for low-income and first-generation college students preferred.
  • Experience with Human Resource Information System(s), and graduation progress and tracking system(s) preferred.
  • Experience in grant writing is preferred.
  • Experience in service to underrepresented student populations, specifically, low-income, first-generation college, and students with disabilities is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Higher education environment and Student Affairs functions including enrollment procedures, financial aid procedures, academic program requirements, college resources and procedures.
  • Academic and career advising theory and practice.
  • Sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of, concerns, and cultural backgrounds of economically and educationally disadvantaged student populations who are low income, first generation college, ethnically diverse students, and students with disabilities.
  • Student development theory and practice, learning strategies and advising techniques.
  • FAFSA and financial aid scholarships’ application process and resources.
  • Experience with case management. Utah public education core curriculum and high school graduation requirements.
  • Interpretation of assessment instruments.
  • Data collection systems and computer operations.
  • Transfer articulation procedures and opportunities within Utah institutions of higher education.
  • Computer operations and data systems knowledge and skills.
  • Work with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member to manage multiple program activities.
  • Tutor training, peer training, and peer leadership training and workshop presentations.
  • Individual and group facilitation skills.
  • Documentation of students’ eligibility for services.
  • Working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
