Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

Course Description

What are the ethical, creative, interpersonal, and internal dimensions of curating an art exhibition of incarcerated artists? This experiential mini-course will introduce students to the Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) and the largest curated exhibition of incarcerated artists in the world. Students will join PCAP staff, curators, and faculty on art selection trips to Michigan prisons to meet artists, provide feedback on their artwork, and select art for the exhibition.

The course will consider: how do power dynamics, identity, and institutional restrictions influence relational and creative aspects of the exhibit, and of PCAP? How do we interpret, decipher, judge, and present the work of incarcerated artists while simultaneously affirming humanity, respecting creative practice, and showing up authentically for incarcerated artists?

These are ideas that will be explored through in-person discussion, artmaking, reflective writing, and participation in PCAP art selection trips to Michigan prisons. Students will be expected to attend at least two selection trips in addition to class meetings.

Responsibilities*

The candidate will provide instruction for one class of approximately 12-14 undergraduates per class in an interdisciplinary liberal arts program. Additional duties include participation in all PCAP art selection trips in 25 Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) prisons and participation in college- and program-wide activities, including program meetings and projects, and providing written evaluations for Residential College students enrolled in the course.

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise and background in differentiated teaching and assessment methodologies, group facilitation, and trauma-informed pedagogy. They will also have a deep understanding of visual art, the intersection of arts and social justice, and artmaking in carceral settings. Knowledge of anti-racist practices desired. The instructor will be required to communicate daily with PCAP staff who are managing the exhibition and coordinate art selection attendance of students with PCAP curators and staff.

Required Qualifications*

Minimum M.F.A. or a B.F.A. plus equivalent post graduate experience in community engaged arts, arts and social justice, or arts and disability. Previous teaching experience is required.  Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required by all PCAP participants entering congregate housing. A background check by MDOC is required for all PCAP participants entering MDOC facilities.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
