Job Description

COMMITMENT TO MISSION:

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
A student advisor advises students concerning their academic schedule and progress.  They work with the student to ensure progress towards graduation by addressing any barriers that may arise and by supporting their educational journey.  Student Advisors are expected to possess knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services.  They must be able to anticipate and interpret student needs and provide individualized service. 
 
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
Bachelors Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or academic field directly related to a field of study at Pittsburgh Technical College.
 
PREFERRED EDUCATION:
Masters Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work or academic field directly related to a field of study at Pittsburgh Technical College.
 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Competency in basic MS Office Suite or software.
  • Business writing skills.
  • Verbal Communication skills using proper grammar and sentence structure.
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of Student Services or Student Success experience.
 
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Primary resource to students for the development of the following through graduation:
    • Program Cohort Layouts
    • Custom Schedules
    • Individual Classes
    • Program modifications due to the failure of classes
    • Transfer of courses layout modifications
  • Individualized academic advising for each student
  • Meet with students to develop, implement, and monitor academic success plans.
  • Monitor completion of mandated training modules
  • Proactive and consistent outreach to students
  • Ensure Satisfactory Academic Progress
    • Educate students on the three academic standards and how failing/dropping classes impacts their academic standing
    • Complete SAP appeals with students
    • Address concerns associated with being at risk for dismissal
  • Work with enrollment services, financial services, and the registrar for students that have been identified in the early alert process; which includes those on put on academic probation and SAP status.
  • Collaborate with other departments to ensure warm hand-off for issues/concerns not handled by student advisors.
  • Coordinate the approval of documentation needed for a student to be placed on a Leave of Absence.
  • Work with enrollment services, financial services, and the registrar for students interested in re-entry after a Leave of Absence.
  • Coordinate distribution of students schedule and booklist at the beginning of each quarter.
  • Coordination of Student State funding requirements (Career Link, etc.).
  • Coordinate students within PTC 4-year programs(s) or integration programs with other colleges or universities.
  • Coordination of student withdrawal process:
    • Workflow (education)
    • Exit counseling to include FA and Housing if applicable
    • Eligibility for return (EFR)
  • Coordinate with the Dean of Counseling and Student Support to identify and serve students that need additional support for completion of a program. 
  • Active participation in various meetings (may include but not limited to: Early Intervention Task Force, SAP, Academic Department, Team).
  • Active participation in various institutional activities (may include but not limited to: Open House, New Student Orientation, Graduation and Nursing Pinning Ceremonies).
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of student information and advising services. 
  • Other duties as assigned.                                                                                                                                
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Student Advisors must possess the ability to demonstrate human relations and communication skills with the students they are serving.  They are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs, policies, procedures, and student support services within the scope of their responsibilities.  The must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized service, as well as working with students who may be confused or demanding.
 
WORK SCHEDULE:
40 hours per week
 
WORKING CONDITIONS: 
  • Equipment used includes desktop or laptop with Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone, and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work generally performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 
Must be able to perform the essential job functions.

ADDITIONAL FACTORS:
  • Must successfully complete criminal background check prior to starting position.
  • Position is a Campus Security Authority and is responsible for assisting institute with Clery Act Compliance.
  • Must provide 3 references.
