The Instructional Laboratory Technician I, under the general supervision of the Instructional Dean of Math and Science and the direct supervision of the Director of Instructional Laboratory Operations, prepares the laboratories for class session activities in a face to face environment for the physical sciences. The incumbent responds to student questions and maintains a supportive and professional relationship with students, lead instructional laboratory technicians, and faculty. The Instructional Laboratory Technician I perform discipline-specific  tasks.

Prepares solutions and other laboratory materials; maintains stockrooms; assists in the set up and break down of experiments,  assists with receiving, and storing chemicals, laboratory supplies, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.  

  • Maintain the safety of the preparation area, laboratories, stockrooms, and classrooms by developing good chemical hygiene habits, being alert for chemical spills and potential hazards 
  • Follow strict safety procedures common to the laboratory 
  • Answering students’ general questions  
  • Assist with the monitoring of, and utilization of supplies via periodic inventory reviews to assure a well-stocked laboratory 
  • Assist with the collection, monitoring, labeling, and storage of chemical waste 
  • Assis with the neutralization of acid-base chemical returns, precipitation of heavy metals and other chemical returns according to accepted safety and environmental practice standards   
  • Receive laboratory supplies, chemicals, and equipment
  • Assist faculty with the presentation of proper laboratory techniques to students during the laboratory session 
  • Assist with the set up and dismantling of experiments as required.
  • Clean, replace, and store apparatus and equipment used in laboratory experiments and demonstrations
  • Notify appropriate personnel of needed repairs, maintenance or any hazardous condition that exist in the laboratories. 
  • Participate in laboratory training and Professional Development in order to remain current on technical/educational and safety standards 
  • Assist Faculty with audio/visual operations
  • Assist with the maintaining of specialized files including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and computerized inventory and storage location of chemicals
  • Maintain a friendly, supportive atmosphere for students, staff, faculty, and the public
  • Performs other duties as appropriate to the classification as assigned by the department supervisor
