Job Summary

The Data Science & Analytics department at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is seeking an experienced and innovative Assistant Director of Business Analytics. Join our team of analysts as we strive to innovate the college’s use of data and build institutional capacity for evidence-based, data-informed planning, and decision-making. With a direct impact on student success, this role will provide critical datasets to faculty, staff, administrators, and students through effective data visualizations and tools.

We are seeking a skilled individual who can ask critical questions, optimize business processes, and meet the increasing demand for data and analysis.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with administrators, staff, faculty, and students to identify opportunities for data and data-informed insights at the College.
  • Fulfill requests for key performance indicators (KPIs), interactive dashboards, ad hoc analysis, and recurring reports.
  • Ensure the delivery of trusted, validated, and accurate data to stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development of enterprise dashboards using business intelligence tools.
  • Ensure all business analytics products adhere to college standards in data quality, reproducibility, security, and design, working closely with data governance stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Information Technology department to ensure secure and efficient data delivery.
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of talented analysts.
  • Manage strategic projects and ad hoc data requests from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Translate user requests into intuitive, visually appealing data displays while meeting the diverse needs of our audience.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Lead Business Analytics
  • Direct, coordinate, and execute sophisticated business analytics processes to align the data efforts of the College to strategic goals and front-line initiatives.
  • Work with the Director of Data Science & Analytics in improving access to meaningful strategic data and information through reports, reporting infrastructure, dashboards, and KPIs with a focus on ease-of-use, effective data visualization, accuracy of data, and when necessary, security of data.
  • Collect data needs from users across the college and translate them into intuitive, stunning, and strategic data products.
  • Manage team resources to ensure that ad hoc requests and strategic projects are delivered in a timely manner.
Team Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of data analysts to ensure that data requests and strategic projects are delivered following best practices in a timely manner.
  • Assist analyst team in understanding requirements, design, implementation, peer review, and communication of results.
  • Manage ad-hoc data requests and prioritize resources to ensure data is accessible to college personnel.
Develop Data Governance
  • Steward Data Governance at SLCC and work with team to strategize data governance priorities and requirements.
  • Manage data governance processes.
  • Work with data engineering team to conduct root cause analysis of data quality issues.
Develop Data Literacy
  • Act as a resident expert for report writers.
  • Provide technical expertise, assistance, and training to other departments across SLCC in creating reports to extract insights from data.
  • Promote effective report writing, data visualization, and data analysis to college personnel.
Team Stewardship
  • Serve as an office representative on various committees and at various meetings.
  • Be an advocate for data across the College.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Data Science, Business Analytics, Computer Science).
  • Proven experience, at least four (4) years of direct, paid, full-time experience, in business analytics, data visualization, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Strong knowledge of data management principles, data governance, and data quality standards.
  • At least three (3) years of experience with SQL or other programming languages.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Cognos.
  • Knowledge of Oracle Apex.
  • Graduate degree in Information Technology, Statistics, Business Management, or related field.
  • Experience in a community college or educational administration.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring a team of analysts.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in learning new software tools and reporting processes efficiently.
  • Demonstrated leadership in reporting from data and analytics systems, including assessing, updating, and optimizing data and reporting processes.
  • Understanding of Data Governance principles and objectives.
  • Ability to think systematically from both executive and front-line perspectives.
  • Experience in project management and driving successful project outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases and proficiency in querying tools.
  • Direct experience in report, dashboard, and query writing using a business intelligence software.
  • Expertise in SQL for data manipulation and analysis.
  • Demonstrated skill in effective data visualization and communication, with the ability to tell compelling stories through data.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to collaborate and provide constructive feedback to diverse teams.
  • Understanding and commitment to the mission of a comprehensive community college.
  • Effective communication across diverse populations, cultures, and abilities to maintain positive relationships within the College.
  • Awareness of patterns of inequity in student outcomes and a willingness to address them proactively.
  • Knowledgeable about the social and historical context of exclusionary practices in American Higher Education.
  • Ability to work with a diverse academic community, including students, faculty, and staff from various backgrounds.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills for facilitating productive meetings and documenting data and decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
