TUTOR II (TEMP) Natural Sciences Supplemental Instruction Leaders

Job Description

Summary

SI leaders provide peer-to-peer academic support by planning and hosting collaborative study group sessions for specific challenging courses. SI leaders do not teach or grade. They are model students who have previously taken the supported class and done well. SI leaders help students work together to better understand course material and build effective learning strategies.

Responsibilities*

  • Design and host twice-weekly study group sessions where students work collaboratively to better understand course material
  • Help students build effective learning strategies and study techniques
  • Attend all lectures for the supported course and meet regularly with course faculty
  • Submit planning and attendance paperwork
  • Undergo training prior to starting day, and participate in ongoing professional development during the semester
  • SI leaders report to either the Director or Assistant Director of the Science Learning Center.

Required Qualifications*

  • Graduation from high school and good academic standing as a University of Michigan-Dearborn student
  • Applicants must have already successfully completed the course they wish to be an SI leader for. Course grade should be in the high B to A range.
  • Ability to communicate clearly about complex information with students from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Willing to apply a continuous improvement mindset to SI work
